My first M28-2
Checkman

Well I went to the gunshow looking for a Model 28 and darned if I found not just one but three - all with the same dealer. All with six inch barrels and all in very good condition, I know because I checked it out the way Jim said to.
I paid $350.00 for mine, but I'm very pleased with it. You see the dealer was originally asking $400.00 but I talked him down. Or is it that he was willing to come down to $350.00, but made it seem like an accomplishment so I would be happy to hand over my credit card? Now that I think about it I made a beeline for his table when I saw what he had and he made a beeline for me - oh well.
Anyway the serial number is N284XXX. Approximately when was it made? And what is the difference between the M28 and the M28-2?
Hey I'm jacked. I went looking for a specific piece and I found it! Got some funny looks from other dealers carrying it around. I guess men in their mid-thirties in the USA are suppossed to go for semi-autos only.:D

Checkman, I think you done good. I bought a 100% NIB 4" M28-2 last month for $350.00 OTD from my local pawn & gun; mine is a "S234XXX" serial number and had the diamond style Magna grips, according to the S&W Std Cat it was made in the 1963-64 period. It was unfired until this past week when I put a box of 125 Grain Remington JKT HP's through it. Man it shot like a fist full of dynamite, I was surprised how much kick it had with that load (reminded me of my M629). I am going to switch to 158 grain Federals this week and try it out with that load. I really like the action, slick as glass and the matte finish is nice too. Odessa (another S&W M28 fan).

Iwonder if there's a M28 convergence in progress.
I just bought one last week.
It shot fine at the indoor range last Thursday night.
I plan to shoot it a lot.
There's another M28 thread on here too.

Well done!
I looked at a much newer model 28 in a gun shop a week or ten days ago (the barrel wasn't pinned, nor was the cylinder recessed) with a $650 price tag. It was in reasonably good, but not great condition. I left it there.

SCSW shows that serial # range is 1975-77. Same book the 28-1 change was the extractor rod thread was changed from RH to LH thread and -2 the cylinder stop was changed, the trigger guard screw was eliminated, diamond grips eliminated and the S prefix changed to N.
I have a 28-2 6" I picked up about a month ago. I prefer 4" guns but this deal was too good to pass up.:D You can`t go wrong either way.

Thanks for the info on my 28 Dinosaur. Now I need to find a 4" and my life will be complete. Well until I realize that there is another model that I have to have. Incidentally that same dealer had a couple really nice Model 27s and a sweet five screw Model 29, but they were out of my price range. Have you seen any nice K-22's around? I once recovered a stolen one (still in the box) from a suspect, but I had to give it back to it's rightful owner. Nice though, made me wish I wasn't a cop - for a second.;)

I've got both 4" and 6" Model 28s. I like the 6", but I adore the 4". It just seems so absolutely RIGHT. I need to do some work on the trigger, but other than putting a set of Boone Trading Company faux ivory grips on it, it's staying original.
I paid $300 and change for the 6", and $250 for the 4" in a private sale.

Standing Wolf, was that the elusive "Elmer Keith Solid Gold Tricentennial Model" we`ve all been searching for?
Nope. It was just a reasonably likeable gun in a gun shop whose owner I consider a greedy @#$%^&!

The 28's are workhorses, but very classy ones!

Color me whatever, but I like a working gun. The 28 is a trooper (without the capital 'T' ;) ).
