Are Boresnakes good for shotguns or should I go with one of the cleaning kits with cord and brush, like the one Dewey makes? I know Boresnakes are great for rifles but I'm wondering if they work as well with shotguns. Thanks for any advice you could throw this newbie's way.

if anything id say a bore snake is better for shotguns. they work great. you do kinda need the rod cleaning kit as some point though there are some things that you cant accomplish with just a bore snake

In my experience, boresnakes are not so hot for cleaning up after slugs. For that, I prefer a rod, brush, tornado brush, chore boy, ect, etc :)

Other than that, with a decent solvent, they seem to work fine on my shotguns.

Boresnakes work well enough for a quick clean; but they do not replace the need for a good cleaning with brush, patches, etc....

Not mutually exclusive.

I shoot mostly competitively and after each outing with my main gun(s) ( a minimum of 100 rounds) I wipe it down, including the action and back of the chamber with one of those "CLP" pre-packaged wipes which ends up going thru the barrel at the end of the job. At the end of each "season," I bore snake 'em. They're always a week or two away from the next outing. The only time I break out the rods and tips and brushes and mops etc. is when I'm putting a gun away/taking it out of rotation indefinitely or it is not intended to be shot anytime soon if I can avoid it (as in HD). For this I am considered a neat-freak on the line. Most guys doing as much shooting clean 'em just at the end of any season and maybe once in the middle -- if they are bored.

I boresnake after every 200 rounds, usually 5 passes.gets the forcing cone build up and choke build up. Its the price you pay for cheap wads ;)

When I clean them, which is typically after each outing of sporting, I use a brush in a rod chucked into my cordless drill. My main focus is the choke tubes - both the tube insides, tube threads....AND the threads inside the barrels. That area needs to be kept free of gunk so the tubes don't seize and they don't get so full of plastic residue that the constriction changes.

Don't you use anti-seize lube, oneounce?

I use a boresnake after every outing. and thoroughly clean the action...after every outing. Does not matter if I fire 2 or 30 rounds hunting I clean em.

I usually wipe the gun down goos with a cloth & oil and run a Tico tool down the barrel, the one I use has a mop that is oiled for the last pull through. I check for build up usually plastic from the wads and then use a brush and solvents to give the gun a complete cleaning.

Shotgun cleaning kit with a good gel bore cleaner.

Slather it on and let it sit for a couple of hours at least and gel cleaner will basically do most of the work for you even if the gun is filthy dirty. A few passes with a brush and a patch or two takes care of the now much softened and loosened if not outright liquified residue.
