I used the search function to find out whether i have a Marlin 336W or 336C.
I can't tell, people are saying all sorts of things.

Let me tell you about the rifle:

Barrel reads-Micro-groove barrel- Mod. 336 Cal. .30-30
Serial number tells me it was made in 1980.
It has a gold trigger.
The front sight is attached with two screws.
It has a rubber pad on the butt stock.
Here's a picture.

Can anyone narrow this down for me?

I'd go with the 336W (http://www.marlinfirearms.com/Firearms/centerfire/336W.asp) model as Marlin's website says nothing about the 336C (http://www.marlinfirearms.com/Firearms/centerfire/336C.asp) having a gold plated trigger.

I don't know but here http://www.marlinowners.com/forums/index.php there is a forum dedicated to the 336

Definately a C. The W is a fairly new rifle and all have the safety which did not come out until 1986 I think.

Marlin has used the gold plated trigger off and on over the years on many rifles. Some years it is on all models, and other years it will only be on specific models.
