I love days like this at the range!

Yesterday, I took my Bushie Dissipator and my .45 to the range.

In the lanes next to me where two couples, shooting lever actions, revolvers, and other politically correct firearms, and a dad/son combo shooting a .22 handgun.

Now, because of the nosy neigbhor factor, I usually shuffle the bushie around in a guitar case, which generally attracts no attention in the neighborhood, but plenty of raised eyebrows on the firing line.

When I hauled the dissipator out, just about everyone was like :what:

(among NJ shooters, the fact that ARs (ahem) XMs are legal isn't exactly common knowledge)

Next thing you know, I'm surrounded by about a half a dozen people asking questions:

Is that a hunting rifle?
What do you hunt with it?
Where did you get it?
Is is LEGAL?
Are you a cop?
How many rounds does it hold?
What sort of ammo does it shoot?
Is the ammo expensive?

I proceeded to explain that it was my FUN rifle, and pointed out the various post ban features that made it legal, some of the history of NJ and federal "Assault Weapon" bans, and showed them how to field strip and shoot it.

They lined up, and I must have gone through 50 rounds as people took their turns shooting it.

By the time it was over, everyone, men, women, and children were in love with the Bushmaster.

The kid wanted one for christmas (I told the dad, sure, why not?)

At least two of them men were making "That's sweet, I have got to get me one of these" comments.

On my way out, I saw at least two of them handling the last AR on the sales rack, talking to the clerk.

Not a bad day for freedom.

Not a bad day at all.

Geek ....... you musta had a smile on your face from ear to ear after that excercise ..... satisfying??? ...... I should say! Would like to have been there to enjoy.

The short session I had yesterday with my son ended, not only in my muzzle flash shots! ( http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?threadid=50079 ) but just before it started getting real twilight, this guy turns up with his .270 rifle, to check his scope. He was a club member but one of the many who it seems just want the range now and again ... and little else.

Initially, he was looking at all the goodies .... assorted handguns including the ''big boys'' and said . ''phew, you got an arsenal''. I initially thought this could mean he was one of those single rifles owners -- hunts once a year - and that's it, regarding much more ownership/possession as ''bad''.

Anyways - then he noticed the SAR1 .. ''What's that?'' asks he, so told him .. and he then proceeded to show more interest in about everything, Contender included.

Not sure but ... got the feeling that the friendly reception we gave him, loan of spotting scope and help spotting (it was way too late really for shooting rifle!) ...... and the chit-chat about all the pieces had in fact in some way ''softened'' him, from being the ''surely one gun's enough'' type to someone who's eyes were opened, usefully.

He stayed on til the end when we took the muzzle flash shots .... and he was every bit as enthusiastic as we were. In a small way I think we usefully helped broaden his horizons.:)

Ha ha ... I've been trolling the local pawn shops lately looking for a beat up used guitar case I could pick up cheap for my RRA. Glad I'm not the only one who's thought of it ;)

A guitar case?

Kinda like the stereotypical Thompson in a violin case...

If I were a cop and I came across a guy with an AR in a guitar case it might make certain bells go off.

But then I'm not a cop so what do I know? ;)

How about an archery case for a compound bow? That would work too.

P95:
OH, YES. Most satisfying.

Well done on your end too!

Bringing the less aware shooters around is just as important as bringing more shooters into the fold. Maybe even more so.

The more people who have "skin in the game" the better.

Your phrase

from being the ''surely one gun's enough'' typeto someone who's eyes were opened, usefully.

pretty much hits it on the head.

I always look forward to any chance I can get to spread the word of the Church of the Second Amendment ;)

For those of you who liv close to a Guitar Center they have nice rectangular hardshell guitar & bass cases for really good prices all of the time. The extra compartments come in handy too.

If you're not close to GC go to www.musiciansfriend.com.

Guitar Case (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/sid=031116194031067160016037401526/g=home/search/detail/base_pid/540563/)

When I was on the road full time I always had at least one more case with me than I did basses.

Something like that happened to me and my wife Thursday, we went shooting at Ben Avery. When we walked on line a gentelman said we could take his bench, as he was going down to the other end. When we left we turned it over to some one else, alto it wasn't busy, just returning the favor.

I stroll onto the range yesterday, looking forward to some happy fun booming, when one of the gentlemen I mentioned in the initial post sees me.

He runs up, slaps me on the back saying "Dude! Buddy! Where've ya been? I haven't seen you since you let me shoot your Bushmaster last time! Come here! Look at this!"

He drags me down the firing line, to proudly show me his pride and joy: A Bushie M4gery.

"I liked yours so much I HAD to get one for my own, I ended up picking this one about a month later...."

We're all comraderie and smiles.

Yup, days like this make it all worthwhile.

(And that's the second confirmed confirmed politically incorrect rifle attributed to my influence. :) )
