--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just purchased another Remington 700 in 308 24" standard barrel not heavy barrel. It has the Synethic stock. I am new to 308 and would like to know some good loads for it. I am just shooting now might hunt hogs or deer later. This gun has a 1-10 twist. I would like different loads to try to see what is the most accurate.
Thanks for any help

Varget and Sierra 168 HPBT is always fun. Not gonna do it for hunting though. Try the Sierra game king for hunting, the matchking for target.

Most .308 Winchester chambered rifles will shoot well with a variety of powders and bullets, the Sierra 168gr,HPBT is a great bullet for distances out to 600 yds, if you shoot closer its little brothwer the 155 Sierra HPBT Palma is eaiser on the shoulder shooting long sessions of step up loadings. If you want a hunting bullet for whitetails the Nosler Ballistic tips are the way to go.

As far as I'm concerned two of the best powders for the 308 WIN. are Hodgdons Varget and Aliants RE 15. I have had luck with both the RE15 seems to work better withthe lighter bullets from Hornadys 110 gr VMAX Varmint to Nosler 125gr Ballistic tip (green), but the Varget handles the 155gr Palma the 165 gr SPBToffered by just about every manufactuer, and the 168 gr Match HPBTs ditto.I havent shot any of the 175 grain HPBT's, and the 180 gr RNSP Woodleigh with a stiff load of Varget will sure knock the dust off the biggest Elk,Moose or Blackbear !

The Federal GOLD MEDAL Match Large rifle primers give the best consistancy inany loading I have shot, and I like the winchester brass.

To be truthfull it is really hard to find a loading that most .308's won't shoot well, and quite a few will reward you with small one ragged hole 5 shot groups .

My favorite light loading is 125 gr Nosler Ballistic tip 48grs Varget in a neck sized Winchester case with tht Federal primer I listed above 2.80" COL. Gives a little more than 3100 fps out of my 26" 1in10 twist Ruger MKII Target, it's easy on the brass and shoulder, works good out to 200, any thing over that and I like to move up to the 155-165 then 168 class.

IMR 4895 works well with 150 gr sierras

Just a question, roc1. Are you sure that your 308's twist is 1in10? Most standard factory Remington barrels are 1in12 twist chambered in 308 Win.

I emailed Remington and they said it was 1-10.I would like to load some light loads if they are accurate as the recoil with the synethic can be punishing after awhile.I load 110 gr Hornady in 06 and it works great would like something for this rifle also.
Thanks again

i have used speers hotcor spitzer 150g (2023) on deer. It is a really good bullet. loaded with re15 or imr4895 or vv N140. good and very deadly combinations.

Get good accuracy with 150gr Nosler Ballistic Tips or Hornady SST and IMR 4064. Hits about 2900fps with 24-26in barrel and CCI primers and Winchester brass. These are flat shooting and are big enough to take down deer, hog, and coyote. These are stout loads at 46gr (max 48gr), might want to try 42-44gr and work up.

308 Win is pretty flexible. I've seen recommendations from faster powders in IMR 3031, H-Benchmark range to the slower IMR 4320, R15 range. I used IMR 4064 because I had it on hand.

125gr have flat trajectory at 3100fps but low BC will cause them to poop out quickly.

Ive tried several powders and bullet combinations for my Rem 700/308, and at least in my rifles, the bullet seems to have a greater effect on accuracy than the powder.

My favorite powders are Win 748 for lighter bullets, Varget, H380 Reloder 15, IMR 4064 and BLC for just about everything else. Reloader 15 is slightly more accurate with my best loads, but velocity is a touch slower-not really enough to worry about.

For the nasty/heavy animals I do prefer the Nosler Partition. I had my day with Ballistic tips, which are accurate, but for hunting/GP, Hornady bullets expand quicker for my work and a whole lot cheaper.
My 700 Varmint Synthetic is a 1:12 twist, and will put one ragged hole for a few magazines full if Im up to it at 200 yards. The rifle surely is.
