Ever have an interest in a particular handgun but NOT buy it solely because of the make? (Not talking because of S&W's agreement either but just becasue of the make itself not those people behing the brand)

I don't think it is the make itself, it is the reputation of the make and maker, maybe coupled with the apparent quality of the gun. If Klotz guns are known for failing to fire, falling apart, or blowing up, I would not buy a Klotz. Or if Klotz guns look shoddy, are made of cheap materials, or show signs of careless manufacture, I would probably also not buy.

Maybe that is not an answer to your question, because I doubt I would "have an interest" in Klotz guns at any time.

Still, I have bought guns that failed both tests, solely for possible collector interest. For example, I am the proud(?) owner of both a Rogak and a Colt AA2000, both of which I bought because of their known problems, not in spite of them. If I were in a self defense situation, I would get one of them out - and give it to the bad guy.

I thought long and hard about a Taurus revolver. It was a back pocket .38 special with pretty comfortable ridged rubber grips and a ported barrel at an affordable price, and just to ice the cake, it had a much better than average trigger.

Unfortunately for Taurus, the company's reputation spoke more firmly to me than the gun itself.

Yes, but in sort of the opposite way I think you mean your question.

I've passed on some guns because I think that anything with that brand is over-priced.

I am traveling in California and was in the local FFL doing my AMMO WEEK purchase (away from home, but still contributing to the cause). The guys behind the counter were having a contest to see who could move a Hi-Point (sp?). Not how many, just one. After much laughter I suggested that they should only sell them to BGs:evil:

I don't think I'll ever buy a Glock... had a passing interest in a model 21 until I fired one. It's like you can feel the frame flex.. wierd.

The model 17 was far better size wise.. but I wanted a 45 not a 9mm... now that i have a hi-cap 9mm.. can't see a need to buy a Glock.

YUP!! Kimber!!
I did extensive research before I bought my Springfield. I rejected Kimber because of their lousy customer service and the vast number of MIM parts used in it's construction!! I also was told that Smith and Wesson makes a significant number of parts for Kimber. That influenced my decision greatly!

I avoid anything that's not quality, or not a good value. Branding is ignored for the most part. Do lots of research before I drop my hard earned credit on a firearm. :D

Ideally I like to get quality used but I have been known to buy new, particularly my rifles.

Para-Ordnance, Kel-Tec or Taurus.

Yes. I've passed on the 5 shot .45 acp Taurus revolver. Partly because of Taurus' spotty quality, and partly because of the barrel ports them seem to put on everything.

Not trying to start a war over here, but I personally am no fan of Sig's line of pistols. I put them in the same class as a Glock, or HK, and in my area the dealers must think that Sig's are made of gold. My only experience with one was a P-220. The finish on the thing was horrible, and would take on surface rust about three days after cleaning every time.
Also had some loose rattle noise to it, and this gun was purchased new. Personally, I think that Glock makes a better pistol...for a couple hundred dollars less.
To each his own, but for the money that Sig's sell for in my area... I expect a lot more gun.
Also, I have recently become a 1911 guy, but I wouldn't even consider one of the fugly things that have been posted on these forums as a "Sig 1911". Not that I don't think Sig's are functional...just a little rough in the quality dept. for the cost.

I base my purchasing on quality, reputation and history. Smith has all three!
With that being said, I would never rule out a gun strictly on word of mouth.

What about all of the ones made from 1902 to 1936? Especially the Stoeger imported American Eagle models? Or the Abercrombie & Fitch models? Swiss? Danish?

I refuse to buy any of the following:

Ruger-Previous bad experiences with quality
Taurus-Same as above
S&W Semi Autos-Same as above
Kimber-Overpriced poop
Beretta-Trigger Pull-had severe breakage issues with .40cal models
KelTec-Poop
Highpoint-Big poop

Generally I stick with Glock\SIG\HK for my experiences with these have yielded no problems whatsoever in over 5yrs of heavy service.
