Thinking of one as gift, but don't know much about this type of shotgun.
Ideas?

I was just going to post the same question. I'm thinking of letting a few SXS's go and getting one of those shotguns with the misplaced barrels.

Good as in reliable or good as in pretty? Reliable for half that amount that I have experience with is the Baikal IZH-27. "Strong like bull!" I love mine. It's not much of a looker, but it certainly works. I also know a few people who have and like the the Huglu O/U's. They are in that price range. Also check out Lanber and Traditions (Fausti) and possibly Charles Daley. Or go a step up in quality that also has looks and look for a used Citori or Beretta.

Fausti Traditions...Around $500 at Wally World. Saw one on sale once for $350.

Used Red Labels can be had for $650- 750 all day long. They are about $900 new out the door. Used Citori's and low end Beretta's can be had for $700- 850 all day long.
The Red Label in the $650 range is a tremendous value, as they are worth every penny of the $900 new.
Okie, I would appreciate it if you would shoot me a list of the sub-12 gauge twicebysides before you let them go, a Savage 311 20 gauge full and modified for example would make me all kinds of excited and the pheasants cower in fear once I figure out where it shoots ........

HSMITH,
Can the auto safety on the Ruger be deactivated?

HSMITH makes a good point about used guns. It is possible to buy a quality gun in this range.
In new guns the maker I would consider first is Lanber. I've examined several samples and they are reasonably well put together guns for the price. While still making inroads in North America they are quite popular in the UK as a beginner's clay gun.

Last month I picked up a new Gazelle Arms O/U 12 ga (M-SPA 300). It's made in Turkey. The fit and finish are very good, locks up solidly, and it points like a magic wand. The gun has double triggers, (you may or may not like, I do) and the safety is manual and does not reset on opening the action (another feature I like). Other models come with different features. It comes with five choke tubes and tool.
My only complaint which has since proven to be unfounded (recoil wise) was that rather than a recoil pad, it has a hard plastic butt plate. So far, I've only shot the Remington ShurShot Heavy dove loads out of it. Every ptarmigan I've shot at has dropped. The addition of a 1" recoil pad for me would make the fit perfect. The price......$395.00 from a gunmonger in Anchorage. I decided on the Gazelle after fondling both the Baikal and Gazelle on the same rack.

Steve, yes the auto safety can be de-activated. I really don't mind it though......
I put a discerning eye on a Huglu also and it was very well made for the money, about $550 if I remember right.

I have to say look at Huglu as well. I have just aquired one. Search the forums at www.sportingclays.net and you will find a cult following of them.
