Picked these up over the weekend.:D The top is a Model 57 no dash 4" nickle. Really nice shape with a bright bore. The double action is just unbelievable!

The bottom is a well used 3 1/2" Model 27-2 S prefix. Looks like it was a LEO duty gun that wasn`t fired too much.

Christmas is gonna be tough this year. Not for me though!:neener:

WOW! Congratulations on two nice acquisitions.

I am getting a bit concerned tho, lots of people are finding .41's but I do not recall seeing any N-frame .41s up here right in S&W's backyard.

Frosty, can you import them from out of state? In the last 6 months I`ve seen a few for sale at dealers and shows. One dealer a couple of months ago had 3 with boxes for about $500 each. I prefer 4" guns right now unless it`s a real good deal. $ $400-500 seems to be the going rate for blue depending on condition etc.

A dealer at the show had an S prefix 6" nickle for $795 I think. Beautiful gun but no box. Too rich for me. Another dealer had a 6" nickle unfired Model 27 with box and papers but no tools for $600+. I think it was an S also but I could be mistaken.

A 4" nickle N frame is like meeting a redhead who`s daddy has ten million dollars and she wants to spend it on me!:D

"Frosty, can you import them from out of state?"

Um, that is a good question which I cannot answer. By some parts of Mass General Law it seems you cannot (gun is supposed to have been registered in state prior to some date in '98). But my first and so-far only M28 was from a TFL member in MN. I think there are ways you can do it, but I'm just not sure right now.

NICE wheelguns. I like revolvers. But, I've never seen a LE agency issue anything shorter than 4" and adjustable sights for on-duty carry.

But, I've never seen a LE agency issue anything shorter than 4" and adjustable sights for on-duty carry. For many years, the standard offerings for the S&W (Pre-27) .357 barrel lengths were 3.5, 5, 6.5, and 8-3/8 inches. Of course, they'd do special orders for other lengths as well. Even after the inception of the Highway Patrolman (later Model 28,) the fancier piece was a 3.5", well into the 1970s, I think it was.

I doubt that vary many agencies ISSUED the slicker piece - - It cost some twenty bucks more than the Highway Patrolman.

Best,
Johnny

Almost bought a like new 4 inch model 57(no dash) a few months back, 650 the person wanted.

It was real tempting but I put it on hold, wanted to see if the gunshop could contact the collector and convince him to part with one of his model 24s or 25s. No dice, the money now goes towards college tuition from month to month or is needing to be saved towards a possible house payment.

That 57 was pristine though, would have been nice to have one of them suckers. Heck, in California 650 dollars for such a gun is considered an exellent deal considering that there isn't anything comparable coming out of S&W currently and that California has KILLED the used gun market when it comes to finding good deals. A 40+ year old like new model 57 that is of excellent quality for 650? Or a new production S&W that doesn't have the style, heritage, or deep bluing and is nowhere near the quality/value?

Seems a no brainer to me.

You have to remember there are thousands of small town P.D.s and years ago many didn`t supply or even pay for a duty gun. As long as it was a large enough caliber you used your own. Even now the dep`t where I live is any 9mm or better and double action.

I`m basing my guess on my Model 10 which has the same type of wear. It was carried a lot no matter who had it.

S&W models, 10, 13, 20, 64, 65, 58, 520 are just a few fixed sight revolvers that I can think of off hand that were PD issued.

All you need now is a 6" Blued M57 .41 to compliment the 4"-er. ;)

I just picked up this set of used grips for the 57 for $20.:D

Nightcrawler, I will pick one up but I`m concentrating on the shorter barreled guns now. Believe it or not I found 3 6" blue 57`s with boxes a few months ago at a dealer near me. $500 each! I really wanted a 4" and I know I shouldn`t have passed on at least one.:banghead:
