Took my new S&W1911 to the range yesterday. Picked up a box of Winchester white box value pack at Wally World, 230gr FMJ. Decided to use the 15 yard range since the gun is new to me.

First shot outta the gun, bullseye!! Now that's a confidence builder I'll tell ya. I shot up all 100 rounds with ~ 2 inch groups on average. The sights as set at the factory need only a slight adjustment as far as I can tell. The 2 8 round Wilson Combat mags that came with the gun worked without a hitch. Not a single feed or extraction problem.

Only negative was the trigger wasn't what I expected. There is a little more travel before it engages the sear than I expected. Still much better than my Beretta DA/SA trigger. The edges of the trigger are gonna need some filing or sanding as they are rather sharp and made my trigger finger tender. All in all I think it's gonna be a keeper.

I haven't owned any other make 1911 so I can't compare it to any other make.

Good way to take down sharp edges on a trigger:

1. Use masking tape to tape over the lower part of frame & trigger guard around the trigger surface.

2. Use strips of fine emory paper, and slowly go over the too-sharp edges. Have the gun point muzzle-down so the grit doesn't get into the mechanism.

Nice to see your Smith made a good 1st impression on you. Their 1911 is on my list as well & to see they're work well out of box helps in the decision making process. Congrats ;)

I shot a buddy's last night at IDPA.....sweet gun......he had problems with Winclean ammo(we have to use this indoors)...I think he said he re-crimped them and it worked.......I was surprised at how little recoil and muzzle flip there was...I had a Combat Commander that chewed my hand up,but this was not the case with the S&W.....if my Commander shot like this I'd still have it.The feel of the gun is great too.....not as heavy as it looks.....a thumbs up.....I need to win the lottery!!!
Nice gun!!db:cool:

It certainly isn't the first .45 cal 1911 to yak on Winclean; I've seen other platforms have trouble in other calibers. You have matches where people have to shoot it?

I have a new 1911 S&W and fired about 3 rounds of Win Clean before it choked on them. I have had other 1911's by Kimber that would not eat this low quality ammo. In the IDPA community I shoot in there have been many 1911 applications that would not take this ammo. The Win Clean out of the box is not consistant in overall case length and a factory crimp is not present. I considered running the ammo through a single stage press equipped with a factory crimp die but have decided instead to change shooting venues where this ammo is not required. I have however fed this S&W with man JHP and RN reloads with not on failure.
