Took my new 1858 Remington out for a few rounds today. Fired mostly .45LC smokeless loads from the R&D cylinder, but also loaded about 18 rounds of blackpowder with round balls.

Man, this thing is a blast to shoot! One of the most fun guns I've ever owned. Was about 6" high and 4" left with the roundballs and BP, and 18" high and 4" left with the 200gr RNFP .45LC loads. Groups averaged 2-3" offhand, unsupported at 25 yards with the roundballs, and slightly larger with the .45LC loads. It was very windy out though.

Trigger pull was crisp and clean, and about 4lbs. Need to adjust sights and refine the .45LC loads some. They are pretty mild at about 775FPS wit the 200gr load. Very light and pleasent to shoot with almost no recoil. About the same as a .32 S&W

Will update as I go.

Congratulations on a fine choice in shoot'n irons. The 1858 with a .45 LC R&D is about the perfect gun -- you can have it both ways with the same gun. I love mine.

What make is the gun? The Uberti & Euroarms guns have a dovetail front sight that can be tapped over. The Piettas might need a slight turn of the barrel.

it's really not that hard to file a notch and install the Uberti driftable sight.

Sounds like fun. Care to share the details of the smokeless cowboy loads?

My Uberti 1858 .45LC is a great weapon and deadly accurate. I've learned to sight in about 4" low at 50 feet. Problem is, I can't find any AMMO!! Even the regular, non cowboy loads have disappeared. The gun will handle standard .45 LC (not the HOT loads, of course). But even a $1 apiece they have vanished from shelves/inventories. I'd try to load my own, but I've spent my life as a general klutz and black powder shooting is as far as I'll go! A couple of grains more or less are no big deal.

Might I suggest you go back to loose powder and percussion caps? There don't seem to be any shortages of those.

The gun is a Pietta, and it has adjustable sights. I shot about a dozen rounds for .45LC this morning before the rain and I was able to move the sights a fair bit. I am not too concerned with "sighting in" until I decide on a load. I am still in the developement stage.

So far, this has worked well:

New Winchester brass 1.285 overall length
Wolf Large Pistol primers
Missouri Bullet Co. .452dia 200gr RNFP
6.0 Grains of Trailboss
COL 1.60
Expected velocity 775fps
Chronographed at 760fps
SD 12 ES 18

Oh, BTW, this load cost me 12 cent per round if I buy the powder and bullets in bulk, and reload the brass an average of 10 times. That is with paying $40 a 1000 for primers. With two annealings I have gotten as many as 35 reloads out of light loads in .38spl, and this should be no different as these loads produce about 8,000cup of pressure.

This is a VERY mild load, with almost no recoil from the heavy 1858. Report is very low as well. If it is sunny you can SEE the bullet in flight. About like shooting a .32ACP or .32S&W.
