I don't know how many of you remember me. May of 2008 I was thinking about getting a handgun. My grandpa found out and he gave me his colt 22 from the 70s. I had plans on getting another gun this last summer. Well that didn't happen. We had our second child last May. She has for the most part spent her whole life in one hospital or another. Things are going as good as they can right now.
On to reason of my post. A little over five years ago my father in law passed away of a massive heart attack in his sleep at the age of 51. He had a gun safe that everone knew he keeped things important to him in. Like the flag from when his dad got buried. But no one knew everything he keeped in there. It was also figgured out that no one knew the combo to get in to the safe either. Well after five years the mother in law decided to hire someone to get it open. One of the things we found in there was a S&W 422. Since I shoot my colt so much she asked me if I wanted it. Can you guess what I said? Another family gun that I can hand down to my son or daughter like I will do with the colt from my grandpa. I just really wish I knew the history of the gun but he took that with him to the grave.
Here is wear I need some help. I have already sent to S&W for a mannual so I can learn how to tear this thing down and clean it. Is there any way I can tell from the serial number how old it is? Is there anything I should know about this gun, good or bad? Peoples likes or dislikes about this model and why you feel the way you do. What did these thing cost new? What would it be worth today? Even though I would never even think about selling this gun ever.
I have done some searches on the web. I have found this one must have been the basic model. It is all black no wood handle and no stainless steal. Never the less this gun means a lot to me to have.
Thanks,
Tim

Try this.

I personally prefer Rugers as the S&Ws are a bit on the frail side. But they're fine for range use.

Got to figgure out this pic thing. I have a 622 which is the silver version and a 2213 in same finish, my wife has the same set in blue. Best 22 ever made in my opion. I've had 7 of them carried one for years coon hunting killed more stuff than rabies. If it ever jams clean the feed ramp. Light weight, alloy [no rust],and feels so good. You've got a keeper for sure.
