Evening folks,

Ive been a lurker for a while but a recent find prompted me to post.

My dad just picked up an old Smith and Wesson from an old friend of his and im trying to find out what model it is and about what it is worth. According to what the friend said its the same gun that was used by the CHP in the late 60's or early 70's other than the logo above the grip and the normal markings on the barrel the only numbers on the gun are as you open th cylinder there is:
AVC 5125 below the barrel and an M 586-1 below that. The only other markings are an A-11 next to the serial number. And the serno itself is
726XX. Thats it only 5 numerals....

Its got a 6 inch barrel and the blueing showes holster wear on the muzzle but is otherwise in great condition.
sorry to say but the gun isstill at my Dads so no pics for a while.....
any feed back would be greatly appriciated..

M 586-1

That would be a model 586-1. Mid/late '80s based on that model and s/n, so nope, not a CHP gun from the '70s (the model was introduced in 1980). It's possible the CHP issued them or allowed/approved them in the 80s. A 6" with a bit of wear would fetch $450 to $475 in the current market I would estimate.

Thanks Oro,

My dad wasnt too sure about its origins, and his sense of time can be a little off sometimes. He got the gun from an old friend of his and its comming my way when i see him next. Its not a bad deal for only 200.00. I think my wife will like it too.
