One of my best and cheapest loads is 4 gr. Trailboss pushing a Missouri 230 gr. RN cast with Wolf primers.
Accuarte and fun to shoot.:)

Missouri Bullets. Either 200 gr SWC or 230 gr RN depending on taste. $34-39 per 500. Plus he gives a THR 5% discount. It's hard to beat W-231 with lead.

Yep... W231 or Bullseye both work great.

200 gr. SWC and either 4.3 gr. Clays or 4.9 gr. of American Select.

Both cheap, clean, and accurate. Each makes 825-850 fps out of a 5" gov't model.

A cheaper alternative for powder would be Unique. At $20 a pound or cheaper, I really like it for .45 ACP.

Whatever you choose, just keep in mind that more tournaments (the serious kind) have been won with Bullseye loads than all other powders put together.

Search This forum For Missouri Bullet Discount, you'll find the code to enter at checkout. It's been recently changed, but its published at THR.

I've just started using Titegroup with 200gr SWC. The last set I loaded with 5.4 grs and they and much more fun to shoot than 230 gr fmj store bought rounds.

I have used HS-6 in my .45 for a few years now. Pretty good powder and fairly easy to find on the shelves since it's technically a shotgun powder. Nosler has load data for it if you need a reference.

all good tips here, I'll have to be the oddball that prefers Red Dot for cast slugs after useing BE for years.

Nothing oddball about Red Dot. It's clean burning, fast burning, and incredibly versatile in a variety of centerfire pistol cartridges. Don't use it for magnum loads, just light to medium strength loads. I like 4.7-5.1 grains for 200 LSWC 45ACP. Very accurate.

4.3 grs of clays behind a 200 gr round nose for practice is very accurate in my Springfield 1911.

I load 5.5gr W231 under a 230gr LRN or FMJ bullet.
W231 = HP-38 so buy the one you can find or is cheaper.

-I've used AA#5 and it works well but I usually use it only with JHP bullets. (it's slower than W231 and the ammo is a little hotter)
-Bullseye is another very popular powder for the .45 Auto and with good reason.
-I've tried Clays and it will produce accurate ammo but I don't like the way Clays meters. Clays can also quickly spike pressures if just slightly overloaded. (so the poor metering can be a problem)
-Even though I'm a huge HS-6 fan I don't use it for the .45 Auto. HS-6 works best up in the higher pressure ranges and the .45 Auto is a low pressure round.
-I'm not a fan of Unique but not because it doesn't work but because it doesn't meter well and it's fairly dirty.

If you want to save some money there's nothing wrong with a 200gr LRN or SWC bullet for the .45 Auto.
