SIG P-210, followed by any number of custom 1911s from folks like Wilson or Baer/custom Hi-Powers.

Straight from the factory? The P-210.

IMNSHO....Any good quality 1911 that tickles your fancy should do. They are a good combination of reliability, accuracy, ergonomics, trigger pull, concealability, and safety...all wrapped up in a proven package. They also are available in a variety of calibers. Mine is a 10mm. I wouldn't trade it for any other pistol.:D

Gotta agree with the Sig P210 noted above. I have a couple of very nice Baers with very good triggers but they can't compare to the P210-6 that I shot.

1911, followed by the 1911, with the 1911 bringing up a close third.

But that's just my personal opinion... ;)

1911, followed by the allmighty BHP, then the ruger mk2.

I'm having trouble deciding by what determining factor you want to know our "best," but I'll give it a shot.

My favorite is the Browning Hi Power. That's probably why I have 2 of them. In my opinion this is the SA pistol that is most likely to work the way it should right out of the box. It also wins my vote for prettiest pistol of all time.

I don't own a 1911 yet, but it would definitely win in the "best trigger" category, and for most, the standard caliber (.45 ACP) is the kicker. It's cool to have that big hole at the "killin' end."

SIG 210 and/or a good 1911 trigger. :)

I've also shot several P7 triggers that were works of art. That is a funny thing, some of them are spongy and others are crisp...

If you have unlimited money, and like 9mm single-stacks, the SIG P210 is objectively the winner. Granted, those are pretty narrow criteria... :D

Otherwise, it is a tie between a 1911 and a BHP, depending on what caliber you like best (9mm for the BHP vs. everything else for the 1911).

"Objectively," eh? ;)

For me there is a Holy Trinity of SAs:

-1911 Govt. Model
-Hi-Power
-Sig 210

No personal experiance but I know some would say a Hammerli SP-20. (http://www.hammerliusa.com/hammerli_sp_20_sport_pistol.htm) That is if you happen to be into high-end target pistols.

A really nice Government Model - the commercial version of the 1911A1.

And, yes, I HAVE a P210.
It is well made and accurate but is no other way equal to the Colt as a shooter.

I'm voting for the P7 line up 1st and then a quality 1911 second. The reason is, my P7M8 was right straight out of the box while I'm still searching for the right 1911 for me :D

Springfield goverment milspec 1911.

Nice and loose.

All others are exactly that.

Yes. :p

Think: reliability, durability, and accuracy. Also, bear in mind that people don't buy the objectively better gun all the time... even or want it. ;)

Think: reliability, durability, and accuracy.

Equivalently priced 1911's give up nothing in any of those three areas, and offer a larger caliber, available magazines and an infinite universe of optional parts, to boot.

Objectively speaking, of course. ;)

(But, yeah, if you're comparing a multi-thousand-dollar 210 to an entry-level 1911, the SIG is objectively the better gun. :uhoh: )

Except that you are ignoring the criteria I set down (defined very narrowly for a reason, BTW):

If you have unlimited money, and like 9mm single-stacks

Hence your caliber point is irrelevant, your magazine point is irrelevant, and the optional parts are irrelevant, too, since with "unlimited money" you can have add-on parts fabricated for you from scratch. Also, "on the market" (see original question) implies you can actually buy it as a finished product, in which case a very strong argument can be made that a SIG P210 is indeed functionally superior to any off-the-shelf 9x19 single stack gun. Of course, some of that is because Wilson et. al. don't even MAKE 9x19 models, so there is no 9x19 proudct on the market that even competes with the P210. Victory by definition.

:neener:

The 1911 is oversized for a 9x19 pistol (especially in the grip), and the 9x19 OAL is really too short for 'ideal' function in the 1911 design. Regardless, you are making me work entirely too hard on what was obviously a joke to begin with. :D

Well, I certainly ignored it. :D

I was answering the question that was asked, that is, "What, In your opinion, is the best single action pistol on the market?"

If you want go randomly redefining the question, I'll change my answer, equally randomly, to "Chevy half-ton, of course!" :neener:

And, yes, I HAVE a P210.
It is well made and accurate but is no other way equal to the Colt as a shooter.I *HAD* a P-210. I decided I needed a used Pickup more than I needed that gun.

There are P-210s and there are P-210s. All of them have good triggers, but a few models have superb triggers. The P-210-5s and -6 have better triggers. They cost several hundred more than the base models.

Mine was a P-210-6. I'd stack that up against any custom 1911... Its certainly as good (or better) than a number of the pricier 1911s I've handled and shot. The proof target that came with it also showed a sub 2" group at 50 meters (more than 55 yards.)

I'm sorry, I thought this was the "Best SA pistol" thread, not the adjacent "Best SA 9mm single-stack pistol for plutocrats" thread. My bad. ;)

SVI limited or open guns (factory) I've handled are sweet. :) They're better than the Sig 210, IMO.

The "BEST" pistol should include things like features as well as workmanship. When talking about Sig P210s, they do well on workmanship and accuracy, but most variations don't fare so well on features. Some have crappy sights, most have the mag release at the base of the mag well.

Worst of all, in all variations, it's still a 9mm with a SINGLE stack, but isn't really compact . . . no, the P210 isn't "best" in my book.

I think "best" would have to be some 1911 variant.

Greeting's All-

As my friend Walt mentioned in his response,
I tend to favor the SIG P210 as the very best S/A
on the current market. Followed very closely by
the BHP, and some 1911 variant's.

As for the 1911 variant's, the Series 70 Colt Gold
Cup comes to mind; STOCK, straight from the box.
Not a "tricked out" high-dollar custom job; just the
CGC.

Best Wishes,

Centerfire:
- SIG P210-6
- HK P7M8 (M13 is too thick)
- Browning HiPower (original)

The M1911 IMHO is not a model, but a category of guns, such as the "SW DA revolvers".

(Rimfire is another question.
The Hammerli 208 is hard to beat, as world recorder sportpistol.)

A 1911 is a original mold where all copies come from.:D It most definitly is a model of a firearm.
