*Hogue
pics would be nice.
considering taking the plunge on one for a 20" mariner (guy lives about 150 miles away, says he'll hold it for my until Friday, so I'm hoping). The 20" is a little on the long side, but a reduced LOP might compensate a bit.
I'm trying to decide if it'll work for me not. I have really large hands and frame.

The Houge stock is real short!13" is about perfect for me with light clothing. The Houge is great for a vest (bullet proof or heavy down) and for indoor shotgunning in tight quaters. It whacks me on the cheek bone after a few boxes of shells, but sure is the shortest handiest shoulder stock I am aware of!

Then it sounds like it is too short and not fitting you properly

I have one I just put on my Mossberg 500 but cannot comment just yet on using it because I have not gone to shoot the darn thing since installing it. Just dry firing, though, it makes the shotgun a lot easier to manipulate IMO and just plain feels better when mounted. I am hopefully going to go shoot the thing in just an hour or two and will report back with how that went.

No Hogues here, not yet anyway. The house guns here have 12.5" LOP stocks, either factory wood or heavy wall synthetic (Speedfeed II) shortened, with good recoil pads installed. They're set up to fit my wife, but I've gotten to like them that way.
Only thing to remember using a short stock is to keep the firing hand thumb over on the trigger finger knuckle. That avoids thumb to nose contact in recoil...

The full length Hogue measures just under 14" and that's a good length for me in an HD gun. I've tried the shorter version and it's too short for me. Firing the short stock jammed my thumb into my nose and under stress I don't want to have to remember to adopt a different hand position than my other shotguns.

the thing is, because of my frame, even a Speedfeed standard length stock, I still get the thumb to the nose if I don't keep it out of the way, either pointed towards the safety or curled over.
So I'm guessing this may be worse. I like the length reduction, but I'm afraid it will just be too small for me.
Thoughts?

I have the short houge stock on my 590, I can shoot 3" mag slugs without punching myself! I am pretty big, 6'4" and around 230lb. I find if you square up to the target instead or blading it becomes very manageable. Easier to walk and shoot this way too, much more natural (apologies to any crabs reading!). In my view perfect for an HD shotgun.

I tried a 500 with this stock, but couldn't help feeling like the gun was in my face. No matter how I stood, I just couldn't get comfortable. My 500 has the old walnut stock on it, and it's still kinda close up with no recoil pad(LOP 14 1/16"). Maybe it's the way I'm built, 6'7", 192 lbs(think telephone pole, and you've got me)

by the way, Gordon
that 870 is about as slick an 18" gun (I'm assuming it is) and about the most pointable, manueverable looking gun I've seen! everything one needs and nothing they don't...

What's up with this ill fitting short stock stuff with the tacticool crowd? You guys a buncha pigmy's or somethin'? I need 14" even for a waterfowl gun that's going to be fired while wearing a coat except in teal season. I'm not particularly large, either, 6 ft and 220. I couldn't hit squat with a 12" stock. My daisy red rider had more pull than that.

I like a longer stock for wingshooting, but for dealing with most kinds of ground level target the shorter stocks just plain work better for most people, and as a small bonus they reduce the length of the gun.

Reduce the length of the gun by, what 2"?? I'd rather it fit me proper, myself. That way, it shoots where I look. My coach gun doesn't need to be any shorter, anyway. It's shorter than any pump with a 12" stock as it is. You have to go PGO to beat it for short.

Not hardly. 6'3", 37" sleeve. The house guns are set up to fit my 5'4" wife, and I make do with them. Actually, I've gotten to like shorter stocks...

Well, at least THAT makes sense. :D I guess if you shot it enough, you'd get used to it. I shoot mine at birds, mostly. I just have it in the bedroom when it ain't killin' doves. It's got a multi-purpose job description.
BTW, my wife's 6'1" and if I don't treat her nice, she slaps me around. :D

Shorter stock let's you stand square to the target instead of bladed.

Every lil bit helps, and besides, being an inch or two closer in reach to the pump on a pumpgun can be a huge help to some shooters.

Are you and your wife and me and mine twins? That's pretty much the exact same measurements.... weird.
That's why I got the smaller stock but we haven't shot it yet but she LOVED the fact that it didn't feel like her hands were so far away from her. I liked it because I can get completely square with it and it does not feel like I am leaning to the right.

14 1/4" fitted by H&H (which I don't own) for a 'field gun'.
I have my clay bird guns set up at 14 1/4"
I like 14 " quail and rabbit guns
I prefer a 13" Combat SG with one light shirt on
I set my wife's SGs up to 12 3/4" but she can use a 13" in the field
The Houge 12" is very very good with vests, or a few shots in a home invasion scenario!!!!!

One thing I forgot to mention, is that with a short stock, you're that much closer to the loading port, making it that much more positive to load if you load from the shoulder like I do.
Bringing everything in 2" is no small deal when you're talking about 2.75" shells that measure 2.25" to 2.4" unfired.

Alright I finally went and shot to day with it and it really works better for me than the 14" stock that was on it before. It actually felt softer shooting than before even with full power buckshot and slugs. I attribute that to the better grip I was able to attain thanks to the rubber on the pistol grip portion and the soft rubber on the forearm. The short stock also made me more square to the targets so I was able to absorb the thump better as well. I am a believer in its attributes and now it will stay on for good. I brought along both stocks and went back and forth with them and the short stock will stay on for both my use and my wife's.

I've got a short Hogue and fore end on my Pardner Protector. I like the setup. Here it is shown with the original furniture to show how much it shortened it up. Sorry for the crappy pic.

I'm 5'9 with arms that are about 27" from my inside shoulder pocket to the tip of my outstretched index finger - so yeah, I'm fairly short and squat. A 12" or so LOP makes a world of difference for me. Don't knock it just because you think it's some sort of "tacticool" statement - it's not.
