First I must say this place is a tremendous wealth of info. I've read many of threads and this is my first post here.

I started loading for my 308 a few months back and during the process I accidentally somehow ordered small pistol magnum primers instead of large rifle when ordering for the 308. Instead of paying all the shipping and hazard charges I decided to keep them(2000).

I'm trying to keep the bill down somewhat so I'm buying my powder from bass pro so I don't have to pay hazmat fees.

I picked up a small bottle of Clays. Can I use those primers and the Clays or should I go to something less fast? I'm gonna start loading for 45 acp in the future.

Yes, you can use the Sm Pistol Magnum primers in your .40 S&W with Clays powder.

Might want to stop 0.1 or 0.2 grain off of max load data though to make up the differance.

The only potential problem might be poor ignition / mis-fires in striker fired guns, but you just need to try it.

In general though, Clays is too fast for the .40 S&W with any bullet weight if full velocity is desired.
It would be fine for lighter plinking loads though.

The same applies to the .45 ACP.
Fine for light target loads, but you can do much better with a different powder for full power loads.

I've been looking at some load charts and maybe different powder. The Clays is unopened so I can take it back.

My choices are green dot
longshot
WSF
Clays
I believe imr 4756

Any better choices?

Edit: Red dot too.

in the 40, my preferred powder is power pistol.

Of those choices, WSF.

Pretty versatile powder. It will also work in the .45 that you say you will be loading. It works well in 9MM as well if you expand your reloading.

Clays is very popular for light target loads with lead in .45, so you may want to keep it.

Thanks Walkalong. The 45 is a gen one glock 21 so lead is not something I'm comfortable shooting out that pistol.

Cool I will pick up the WSF tonight.

Damn, Bass Pro would take the powder back because it left the store. So I'll just use it for target loads as stated from RC and Walk. I did end up getting the IMR SR 4756. I hope this is better powder. They ran out of the WSF.

I use the SR 4756 in my .40. Never had any issues with it. I load 165 grain slugs with around 6 grains, 180's with about 5.6. They aren't max, but you still might want to tone that down a touch for the mag primers.

I've noticed that the SR 4756 is a tad cleaner than other powders I've tried. I'm happy with it.

SR 4756 is a good powder.

I have not tried it in .40, but I see no reason it would not work well. It is about the same burn rate as other powders proven to work in .40. It burns very clean. It is very position sensitive, but that won't matter in .40, as it will fill enough of the case.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the help.

What's the clays good for? Maybe I can trade with someone locally.

I load most of my .40s with Power Pistol. It works well in a variety of loads and does fine with magnum primers.
