and I don't even know how. It's the detent on the 590's barrel lug that the cap rups on and rests in between. It came off during the course of cleaning. I found the detent, is there also a spring? Second off, how big of a deal is it not to have the detent? I can still screw the barrel on pretty tight. Seems like worst case scenario I'd have to retighten every bunch of rounds....what to do?

sending it to Mossberg. They said they'd fix it at no chrage. I'm hoping they don't change their tune. It doesn't seem like that big of a deal, but at the same time they aren't exactly parts you can find at your local gunshop.

Wow. I bought two sets of ball and detent springs from Mossberg, whom I was ordering from anyway, for a REMINGTON 870 20" rifle sighted barrrel that had a rusty hole where these used to be. I called my old gunsmith -- retired to New Hampshire or Vermont or something!!!

The two new ones I spoke to I explained I just wanted them to drill a new hole, put the spring and ball in, and peen it into place. Neither would do it and said to send it to Remington. Then they'd ask me about the real handgun work I wanted done and I had to laugh at them openly.

I had the same thing happen - easy fix. I just got a little ball bearing that looked like it would fit, put in the hole, and peened it by tapping an old screwdriver with a piece of wood. Peening is easy, just disrupt the edge of the hole a tiny bit, and that ball isn't going anywhere.

Don't try to peen perpendicular to the opening, come in at a 45 degree angle and hit the corner of the edge. It's much easier to move the metal there.
