Para GI, SA Mil-Spec Owners??? New guy...

February 10, 2010, 12:58 AM the high road. There seems to be a wealth of practical knowlege on this site so I would like to ask a question of those of you that own a Para GI Expert or a Springfield Mil-Spec.

Which do you own and what do you LIKE about it?

I have an opportunity to pick up one of these at a steal, and wanted some input from those who LIKE them. Here is what I can say to help this along...

No real plan to conceal carry it
Not going to change any parts
Basically open box, load, shoot, clean, put back in box

I have read plenty of gripes about just about every handgun out there, but was interested to hear about the reasons you chose the one you did. (Mil-spec or Para GI that is) Thanks

I went with th GI Expert for the value, not really interested in a $1500+ custom 1911. It was a great shooter and I liked everything about it until my truck was broken into at a hospital parking lot and it was stolen. I will be buying another.....

Para GI Expert is a solid entry level 1911. Put 500 rounds through it and it is now 100% reliable. I changed out the grips as the plastic ones it came with are not very grippy.

I bought a Para GI Expert, used, in excellent condition.
The good:
- SS barrel with good barrel to bushing fit.
- Reliable and accurate right out of the box.
The bad:
- The trigger had a little creep, weight was OK.
- Replacement sights are not common because of the Para dovetail cut.
The ugly:
- The finish (Paracote?) is not durable, easily scratched. All internal parts are coated and once the finish starts coming off its better to remove all of it. I understand if you bought the gun new Para would refinish it, but I’m not sure it would be any better.

I would buy again; I have changed the springs and done some internal smoothing. Very nice trigger now. I shoot it in IDPA.

BMF: Sorry to hear about the loss. FWIW I had an SKS that was stolen out of the trunk of my car. It was recovered two weeks later and returned to me over two years later

I have heard about finish being very bad on alot of their guns but reliable and accurate is good... thats three checks for the Para, anybody have any particular likes about the Mil-Spec?

If I am not mistaken arent the two very similar in concept, old style guide rod and spring, vanilla accessories like safety, sights etc?

you get more features for less money with the para gi expert. yes the finish sux, but it's still a dead reliable tack driver.
