It lived in the United States, and the name certainly is right...

It's called the Ammosaurus... :D

Mike, you should not have started this thread. You just know we're going to get endless replies about the best gun and ammo to use against the Ammosaurus.

For instance, would a standard loading of .30-06 well placed into the brain take him out?

Or should we step up to a .308? Or a .300 Win Mag? .375 H&H?

I really dunno if I want to know just exactly you were researching Mike.
Oh wait , you had the sauerkraut for dinner afterall perhaps...:p

Okay, lets just say your "ammo" get chosen as mascot. Just what in pray tell is this critter gonna use for a sidearm? Got a feeling concealment not going to be a concern.

So being one of us , what , an X frame perhaps?...:D

Fly,
Shoot it?

Good <diety> no! He's the bringer of ammo!
Just toss 'im a cow and he'll give you a few dozen cases of your favorite caliber. Hence the name.

I should think that the obvios answer would be the 577 Tyrannosaurus, though I question whether it would be capable of sub-MOA accuracy! http://www.kcc.org.nz/images/extinctbirds/moacolour200.jpg

"Just what in pray tell is this critter gonna use for a sidearm?"

You know, funny you should mention that...

When I first popped that image open (I was looking for information on the Denver Museum's Triceratops announcement today, they said they had something rare and unique), the FIRST thing that sprang into my mind was an 1880s gunfighter, so I really think a gun from the West would be appropriate.

Perhaps an M&H. They're dinosaurs in that few people have heard of them anymore...

"Toss him a cow..."

Hope. Sorry. He was an herbivore...

"sub-MOA accuracy..."

OWWWWWWWWWWWWW! OUCH!

Any anime fan could tell you the right sidearm for our ammosaurus would have to be the 37 mm [sic!] :what: revolvers used by the Type 97 Patrol Labors of Section 2 in the Patlabor shows!

I believe its title is something like "A Gun for Dinosaur" by one of the Golden Age giants, sorry I can't recall his name. A classic tale of the White Hunter with a time machine and a really, really bad client.

As far as the "Ammo" part goes, y'all do realize that ammo is just a bit of military jargon, and the dictionary says that Ammon was an ancient god whose worship involved piling up huge amounts of animal dung just outside the temple. That's where we got the word "ammonia", from the very strong very bad smell.

Orthonym,
I remember that story. It was called "Echoes of Thunder" or something else with "Thunder" in the title, right? Guy stepped off the path, smushed a butterfly. When they go back the election results changed and the alphabet was different.
Okay, so who's going to start making the Ammosaurus T-shirts and what logo is going to go on them?

f course, if the local news gets a hold of this story, they'll determine it needs to be hunted down with a 50mm caliber bolt action assault rifle--for the children, of course...

Ammosaurus was a plateosaurid with small feet but big hands with thumbs with formidable claws. It was first discovered in 1890.
Length 2.4 - 4m (8 - 13 ft).

Hmm.. He's not the M1Garand type.. He's got big hands and big thumbs.. "Garand Thumb" is likely..

Pick another gun...

Sprague DeCamp's "Gun For Dinosaur" (part of "Best of Sprague DeCamp" compilations) is a great little story. Also worth reading would be "Lest Darkness Fall" and "Falliable Fiend" (both great for history and ancient warfare buffs)

Darn Oleg! You beat me to the punch. I was coming here to say "A Gun for Dinosaur" was one of L. Sprague DeCamp's gems. Read it long, long ago. I think I've got it in one of my Hugo collections so I'll see if the type of gun is mentioned.

"Sorry. He was an herbivore..."

So toss him a Herb. Sure beats having to have better running shoes than Herb. (I think only Mike and I can fully appreciate that one.)

The science fiction story about guy stepping off the path while hunting a Tyrannosaur is entitled "A Sound of Thunder", by the infamous SF writer, Ray Bradbury. It was written in the 1950's, and was/is a classic.

I remember a VERY similar, and very bad, 1970s movie based on that concept. These people use a boring machine to tunnel to some sort of land that time forgot. A couple of scientists (one very hot), a very bad man (African hunter), and his trusted guide from Africa....

If our critter was carrying a handgun, he'll need to pack it in a shoulder harness as his arms are not long enuf for an Uncle Mike's fanny pack or other typical holsters worn about the waist.

Mike-

Ah yes, remembering the old Ammo Day festivities; the children unwrapping their new bricks of rimfire, Mom & Dad exchanging smiles as each new wonder was revealed; the 'special' boxes of Match ammo wrapped in colorful ribbons; and maybe, just maybe, a whole CASE of .308 ready for the afternoon's traditional Range Shoot. Everyone glad that Ammosaur had been good to them this year.

On this special day, even the little ones might get to look through the Mildot and squeeze off a round or two, under careful but proud parental guidance...

Range bags filled with cleaning gear... the smell of powder and solvents in the air... the sounds of timed fire wafting over the hills...

What a great holiday! :D

Sprague DeCamp's "Gun For Dinosaur" (part of "Best of Sprague DeCamp" compilations) is a great little story. Agreed - I enjoyed it.

I also recall a story called "Time Safari" . . . (by David Drake?)

It's been a while since I read it, but IIRC the lead character carried an M1 Garand which had been converted to take BAR magazines, and had some sort of special AP ammo designed to penetrate the brain pan of a dino despite all the bone around it. (Made me wonder if the author had read anything by W.D.M. Bell)

Bradbury's "Sound of Thunder" was the basis for "Time and Punishment" in The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror V (http://www.snpp.com/episodes/2F03.html) (October 30, 1994).

It was the episode where a malfunctioning toaster sends Homer "back to the time when dinosaurs weren't just confined to zoos!"

I don't have the Photoshop skills needed. I think he needs "Pancho Villa" style crossed bandoliers with wheelguns. That should keep the grips within reach.

Hate to see him trying to draw from tactical thigh holsters, though.

I liked Gun-fucious' mods, but I's go for a 1911 in one hand, a foot on an ammo can, and a couple of bandoliers for the boy.

Oleg,

I have a hardcopy 1st edition of the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle book. "At the Earth's Core" I believe is the title. Edgar Rice Burroughs also had a couple of books in the same genre; "The World That Time Forgot" and "The People That Time Forgot" I think I have the early 1900's 1st ed hardcovers of those too. (I'll have to sort through my boxes) Great stories.

Oops, carpetbagger is right! Got my titles mixed up. When I got home tonight I started looking up the books that I had not read in many years. Doyle's book was "The Lost World". Burroughs titles were "At the Earths Core", "Pellucidar", "The Land That Time Forgot", "Cave Girl". I think I'll settle in and read them again. Doyle's book was copyrighted in 1912 and Burroughs stories were published in the early '20's.

I was hoping Ammosaurus would display a little more "tacticality."

Are there any known photos of the beast where he is caught on film with a couple of trauma plates duct taped to his front and back?

With those long legs, he definitely must have some sort of ninjitsu wall climbing ability as well. . . .
