All,

Can someone please post step by step instructions on how to replace a single sided safety with an ambi safety on an AR-15. I did look on AR-15 and have a basic concept, but they show you the process on a stripped lower. I need to do this on a completed rifle.

Please feel free to dumb this down as much as possible as I am by no means an accomplished gunsmith.

Thanks for all the help!

You'll need to remove the pistol grip and the selector spring and detent. Then remove the hammer, trigger and disconnector, and finally the selector lever. Install your new selector, and reassemble in reverse order. Piece of cake.

If you can disassemble and reassemble a lower receiver, it shouldn't take more than 10 minutes, tops. You can PM me with any questions if you'd like. I've been working on M16s and AR-15s for 37 years.

Nicholst55,

Thank you for the reply. I should have mentioned that the rifle has a modular trigger made by Chip McCormick. Similar to a Timney drop in trigger.

Can you please tell me how this changes things?

Thanks again.

The only change will be that you only need to remove and reinstall the modular trigger unit, rather than the separate hammer, trigger, and disconnector.

Many of the AR-15's I have worked on will allow the safety to be installed/removed if the hammer is cocked (pistol grip parts removed). I believe the McCormick triggers have to be done this way since you can't install the safety until the trigger unit has been installed. If you run into any problems, let us know.
