What lengths will you go to to hunt?

You may have seen my other posts about Ten Point Willy. I'm obsessed with him. I can't think about anything else hardly. When I'm in church, instead of listening to the sermon, I'm thinking, "You know, if I were to park my truck BEFORE the powerline, he'd never know I was coming, I could come in from the southeast through those saplings and sit below that big oak instead of in that little clump of bushes. I bet I'd have a shot at him then..."

It's thoughts like these that I can't get out of my head.

I'm so obsessed that for the past two mornings, I've gotten up at 5 instead of 6:30 so I could get all my work clothes in the truck. Drove out and parked a quarter mile from where I normally park my truck so I could walk in in case I've been spooking him up until now.

And here's the kicker, if I do all that, I can only sit there 25 minutes before I have to leave!

Ridiculous!:banghead:

I'm just hoping that he's no where near when I walk in the woods, but that he's walking my direction and will pass by me 15 minutes after I set up.

I figure the chances of me actually killing him like this are about 4 bazillion to 1.

But I keep reminding myself, I won't get him by sleeping in late!

So how obsessive are you?

I start thinking about the next deer season and what I will bring home (or won't bring home) from then end of the current deer season. I find myself thinking a lot about "What if I'd have sat here instead of there?... I'd already have him in the bag." I had a real nice 8-point walk into some thick stuff where I couldn't get a shot this year and I can't help but think "If I'd have had a grunt call or something of that sort, I could've brought him back to me." I've yet to bag one this year, but the season's not over yet. I just had to come back to work as I was about to run out of vacation days. I'm single with no children, so 99% of my alotted vacation time goes into hunting. :D

We (deer hunters) all think and worry alike. You ARE NOT alone. I found out that the woods I hunt (Uncle's farm) had a bow hunter (11/18) spot 5 bucks and 12 does. All were too far for a shot. In fact, my uncle told me (11/19) he saw a 12 pt. buck in the empty field behind his barn. So, now I'm re-thinking what to use come gun season on Dec 1st. Was planning on taking my 44 handgun, but now I'll use my scoped 870 shotgun. I want that additional 50 yards added to my shooting distance. If only it were legal to use a rifle. The only way I survive knowing a didn't get that buck I spotted in late summer is telling myself, 'well, maybe a bow hunter got him already'. We are a strange breed. But, damn, it's fun

if it is hunting season, and i have a tag in my pocket, i'm going...

last year i ripped up some ligaments in my right knee the day before i was to leave for my first rifle hunt of the year... it was painful, but i went. lots of tylenol and a couple ace bandages, hand me my gun, i'm going...

this year, while sidehilling, i sprained my right ankle. was a little tender, but kept going. couldn't have been more than an hour later and i blew out my left knee... back to the truck for some ibuprofen, tylenol, ace bandages... and i'm hunting.

if i am closing in on a buck, i have many debates in my head about what he is doing, where, and why... i am constantly looking for a 'better spot'. on days when i am just not seeing deer, and it is hard to stay out, i ask myself 'how many deer have you killed from the couch?'... many times, shortly after this, i get into deer...

always planning and thinking about next season...etc etc...

I love to hunt, with it giving me some of my best recollections these past 40 years. Not just hunting, but reading about it, polishing my guns, going to the range to sight in, endless fantasies while driving to work. I spent over 25 years trapped in Suburbia and finally fled to the woods where we have deer all over the place.

The big bucks have always eluded me so the biggest I've ever seen in the wild was an eight pointer. Now I hunt in defense just to keep from being overrun by does and spike bucks. Maybe if I can just thin down the herd a little more so the bucks will have more food...

Drive 2 hours to deer camp after working all week. Set up in that stand in the freezing cold or rain or both. Spend more money that what we really should each year (the meat probably comes up to 30$ or 40$ a pound). All for what is only a couple weeks out of the whole year. Rare, dying breed who is unappreciated. But I still love it.

How about work till 0200 in the morning, go home and nap for an hour and a half, shower to wake up and head out to the field.

Come out of the field, go to work in the eve and do it all over again....

I did that for 4 days straight til my body told me enough was enough. :what:
