What you have is a Mauser-Vergueiro rifle. Designed by Senor Verguiero who thought Portugal needed a Portugese designed rifle instead of an ordinary Mauser like everybody else. It has a split bridge, forward bolt handle, and detachable bolt head like a Mannlicher, but with Mauser type trigger group and magazine. Manufactured by DWM who must have wondered what Portugal was thinking about. The original caliber was 6.5x58, used nowhere else I know of. COTW says there were a very few sporting rifles in the caliber.

In 1937 Portugal adopted the 8x57, probably bought some '98s and rebarreled the Vergueiros to 8mm, creating the 1904/39 you have.

That is all I could recall or find in Smith and Cartridges of the World.
