Buying first surefire: G2 or 6P

I'm looking at buying my first surefire light. I have maglites that I use at home for general use and would like something that I can carry on my person, especially at night.

After looking at their website, I've narrowed it down to a few choices: I want something full size (not the E1 or E2), so I've been comparing the G2 Nitrolon with the 6P. They both have the same power in lumens in running time. So why is the G2 so much less money ($34 vs. $84)? Any reason to choose the 6P over the G2?

Thanks in advance.

Probably because the G2 is Nitrolon and the 6P is machined (hard anodized) aluminum..

Options, options... and more options. CandlePowerForum members like the 6P because of the many ways that you can modify them (with body extensions, turbo heads, more powerful lamp assemblies, et cetera..)
[There is a pic of a modified 6P on CPF (I forget where), that has been turned into a 500 lumen flamethrower..]

Oh, one other thing, that $84 (retail) price on that 6P is a tad high, if you go to www.lpstactical.com you can pick one up for $63 with free shipping.. ;)

Edit: Lest I forget, you can also modify the G2 as well.. If, say, you should need more power than the P60/P61 LA's offer..

If you are interested in the Surefire 6P, I have a few BRAND NEW in a factory sealed packages 6Ps available at UNDER $60 including insured shipping anywhere in the USA.

:D :what: :D

I think another important difference between the G2 and the 6P is that the 6P has a "lock out" tail cap, while the G2 does not. I like the "lock out" tailcap feature to help prevent the light from going on accidentially (for example, when I leave it in my truck's glove box).

By the way, I have three 6Ps -- I keep one in the house as my "home defense" flashlight on my nightstand, and I keep one in each of my vehicles.

:scrutiny: :neener: :uhoh:

You can add a LOTC to the G2, but it's gonna run ya $28 or so for the part. ;)

Was asking myself the same question about a year ago. I ended up with the G2, an extra P61 bulb, nylon holster and a box of 12 batteries for about the same cost or less than any of the other surefires I was looking at. I have been very happy with it. Occaisionally carry in a coat pocket and never had a problem with the light being activated and running down the battery. Carrying in a pants pocket might be different. The lockout tail cap would be a nice feature. For me it was the only thing that made me think twice about the G2, but I can say I have no regrets on the G2. Call it Nitrolon or call it plastic, it's still a sturdy little light.

I don't think you can go wrong either way. I'm sold on the reliability and beam quality of the Surefire. Been trying to decide between the C2, Z2 and G2Z for my next one.

The 6P also has the anti-roll bezel.

Personally I like the E2e as a EDC light for the pocket clip.

I currently own a G2 Nitrolon and a Z2 Combat Light. I really like these lights. Each serves a different purpose for me.

The G2 is my light on my green duty gear belt for work and deployments. I wish it had the lockout tailcap, but can live without it. I have went through many batteries with this l;ight simply because the button got pushed in-advertently.

The Z2 stays on my black duty belt. This one see's the most use and while I like the G2, the Z2 is my pick as best of the two.

If you are going to be carrying it, there's no choice. Go with the 6P. The lockout tailcap is priceless. I have several G2s, but they aren't carry lights because I've had too many WLADs with them. Talk about killing your night vision.
