Grandson fires his first Flintlock

My grandson came by yesterday amidst the snow that is very rare in this part of Alabama. After we sat and had coffee (hot chocolate for grandson) he had to look over what papa had. When he saw the Jukar colonial 45 flintlock he was next to dancing in his pants. I loaded up a charge of 35 g powder with only an patch over the powder to make a nice blank. Then we go out back and where I explained how everything worked I primed the pan, closed the frizzen with hammer on half cock. Now for a 9yr old he has more discipline than a lot of adults I have seen. I had instructed him the if nothing happened (FTF) not to move the gun and wait for a few seconds. Then he pulled the hammer back, gripped the pistol firmly, aimed out into the woods, Snapped the trigger and perfect stream of sparks, flash of prime and BOOM. Now lets face it even at my age it is great feeling when the gun fires but to see the look on his face was worth a million dollars. Doubt that his smile could have gone any further only comments he made were COOOL Papa can I do it again!! Only regret is I didn't have picture of this.

My grandson is now 24 but we started shooting together when he was 9, never BP though, next time out..
My other grandson is in MS so I don't get to spend this kind of quality time with him.
Enjoy your good time with him they grow up fast.

Walkers210, rightfully you should feel proud. Passing on the joy of thinking and firing one round at a time is priceless. Passing on the appreciation for our beloved sidelocks is too rare today. When the snow melts get that boy out again with a fun target to shoot at, such as a pumpkin.

Tom your so right about how fast they grow. Seems like it was just yesterday that I took my 2yr old son out and let him start shooting a 410 shotgun. First with nothing but primer and then worked up to powder charge with over the charge wad, then bird shot with with me holding the gun against my leg (his arms were not long enough). Did the same method teaching my girls. Got them past the fear of shooting and just eased them into all the right ways and safety.

You are absolutly right, I'm sure it was a mountain top experience for him. What a great rememberance for both of you on that snowy day.

Thank you for starting him young. The muzzle loading community is a greying community and we need some young 'uns to refill our depleting ranks.
