As a boy everyone got there first marlin model 60 at 10 on christmas day. My dad was out of work so he couldnt afford it. But he found work with AT&T and for my b-day went halves with me on a Ruger Standard. I still have it.

i knew nothing about guns (parents just didn't have any use for them - no relatives around). found my way into a gunshop one summer day shortly after turning 18, and got absolutely ripped off on a ruger 10-22. killed a lot of gophers with the rifle and then put it up for probably 5 years or so, and then got back into guns huge.

still have that 10-22, still remember how bad i got ripped off on it. it was my 'awakening' into the real world that there are truly unscrupulous merchants out there, and that it is always buyer beware.

when i was about six or seven i went with my uncle jerry to the rock house cafe [ a juke joint just outside pinson al ] i was playing a pinball machine while my uncle drank beer [ i couldnt drink beer cause i was too short to sit on the stool at the bar ] when this good ole boy come in tote'n a rifle & wanted to sell it. somebody offered him $10 & he turned it down. i turned my pockets out on the pinball & counted about $12.50 or so & asked uncle jerry to see if he would sell it for that. he said no but he would take $15 so jerry made up the difference. i came home with a jap 99 that was taller than i was! that was my 1st real cartridge firearm. oh yeah i had to wash uncle jerry's '63 t bird for the rest of the summer.

purchased at Kmart, with the optional 4x scope on it..

Many thousands of rounds, the rifle now sits in my safe, waiting on my son to claim it.

H&R single shot 20 gauge when I was 10 or 11. Dad didn't tell me that gun kicked harder than his "big" shotgun. He let me in on the secret a couple of Chrismas' later when he got me a Rem 1100. :-) Still have both of them and they're not going anywhere...

First FIREARM was actually a S&W Model 3000 "Riot Gun", 12 ga with folding stock, P-grip, rifled barrel and full iron sights. Boy oh boy was I stupid for trading that one off for a song. My neighbor who was 18 got it for me from an individual who listed it for sale in the local paper. I was only 15 and my mother wouldn't have allowed a gun. She didn't know. But she found out later.

Dad gave me a 12 gauge for either my birthday or Christmas when I was young. I still have it.

When I was about 11 or 12 my uncle gave me a Stevens single shot bolt action .22 rifle that was my constant companion on all my outings as a youth in the hills of West Virginia. It was the kind that you had to open the bolt, put the round in the chamber, close the bolt, pull back the knob on the back, then fire. It was a slow tedious process when a second shot was needed for squirrels. You better believe I got good with that rifle! I never truly appreciated that rifle then, always thinking the slick Remington Nylon 66 or Marlin Model 60 would have been the better guns with their tube fed, shoot all day supply of ammo. Now looking back I can see how wrong I was.

My mom was scared to death to have a gun in the house (my dad was from Chicago and didn't much care for guns) so it stayed at my uncles house, but I could get it anytime I wanted. Eventually I joined the Marine Corps where I excelled at shooting thanks to that little .22 rifle, and passed it on to my little cousin. He has since given back to his dad and I was told if I ever get back that way I can have it back to give to my son.

What a special present that would make for a young boy, huh?

When I was pretty small, maybe 5 or 6 years old, my Dad's friend handed me his Model 1890 .22 WRF and asked me to keep it 'until I see you again'. Of course I never did 'see him again' because he died a few days later of cancer. I still have it 50 some years later.

Ithaca m94 single shot 22 my dad got it for me in the third grade. Traded it for a motorcycle in high school. Now he and the gun are gone.
