Hi guys, I just bought a Glock 23 from a friend, the gun is in rather good shape but has heavy holster/mexican carry wear marks on the slide that i dont want to preserve... I know its a tool and stuff, but i want it to look good...

I need you to give me some homemade solution for this, i heard that the "black oxide" of the slide can be removed, preserving the tenifer treatment (as its inlayed a few cents of an inch in the steel)

Any homemade refinishing idea is welcome... the idea is to have an even color all around it, no matter if its black, grey, silver, chrome... or whatever, the idea for it is to be corrosion resistan and scratch proof...

Maybe blasting it and sending to a chrome shop.... ???

I dont want it to be too flashy, just a neat tool...

I have seen refinished ones, that looked bead blasted with a dull finish like Parkerizing and they just did not look right. The factory uses Oxynate 7 for refinishing if I remember correctly, to put the black back on. And you are correct that the Tenifer is still there even though the black finish is gone.

Maybe blasting it and sending to a chrome shop.... ??? No! No! No!

Auto plating shops have neither the equipment or the FFL license to refinish guns with bumper chrome.

Not only is it against the law, it is very likely unsafe due to Hydrogen Embrittlement on a high carbon steel pistol slide.

What if i give it a mild sandblast just to take the black finish off...leaving the intact tenifer??? will it rust?

The Tenefer ferritic nitrocarburizing is only .001" - .002" deep.

If you can bead blast it lightly without cutting through it, rust should not be a problem.

Is there any chemicla way to remove the black finish???? I think sandblasting may go thru the tenifer.... :S

That should do the work!!!.... but what about the Tenifer??? :S the idea is to have it look even and neat again... but it will be my carry gun... dumped in my truck for days or stuck in my pants with no holster for long walks...

It must not rust and look even again... i dont mind if it turns gray or something...i just want the wear marks off

Are they marks in the finish, or marks IN the metal ? The Tenifer is quite tough and even if you buff it off it will provide rust resistance, it will be silver, but will not rust. If you manag e to get through the Tenifer, well that is another story. That is why you will see that the blueing is worn off and it stays silver and does not rust. Onynate 7 is just blueing to provide color to the finish. As I said before I have seen some that looked to be Parkerized and bead blasted. They just looked dull and re-finished. Nothing like the Parkerizing on a M1 Garand.

I don't know about the other stuff, but the FFL/Legal concern should be a non-issue. You don't send in the frame (which is by law the gun) you send in just the slide. The slide is a part, no FFL required.

Av Shooter is right you dont need a ffl to do slide work only if you have the frame with the # on it ruger MK I II III are the only ones i can think of that are exceptions

Regardless of all that, you do not want a Harley Muffler shop plating a handgun.

I think if the finish was removed and since the tenifer will still be there, a two-tone glock would be really cool looking. I've been thinking about getting a lone wolf long slide and barrel for my Glock 22, essentially turning it into a G24. I've seen some of these and really dig the duo-tone look.

Glock does factory refinish on slides very inexpensively.contact them, I heard their turn around is very quick but haven't tried yet. You can't beat a factory finish.

Get some teflon moly spray and bake from Brownell's, and for ~$20 you'll have a great looking slide in any color you want.

That way, when you carry the Glock around on the long walks without a holster, the ambulance crew that responds to your eventual ND call can remark how nice your pistol looked before it got blood all over it.

Glock will refinish a slide with a "factory finish" but where the @#$%^ did you get the idea that "You can't beat a factory finish." There are a number of finishes available that are far superior to Glock or any other "factory finish".
