And the point is? The 1911 has been controversial since at least 1907, before it was even introduced. Many in the military complained that the Ordnance testing was unfairly biased against the Savage M1907 and for the Colt, despite severe issues with the Colt pistols such as cracked frames, split barrels, and numerous malfunctions.
People will always either love or hate the 1911. It just proves that it's about the top handgun out there, as few waste time discussing the merits of unpopular handguns. After all, not a whole of debate surrounds the Colt All-American now, does it? ;)

Get what ya like, or flip a coin and like what ya get.
I've been issued the M1911A1, have owned plenty of my own over the yrs from stock to custom Clarks and TRPs...
Hard to beat when they are working right. Still like lottsa other guns better though... BHP, CZ75, PSP, USP, Glock, P99, HS/XD...

But there isn't anything finer than a custom 1911 :D

I've actually fired a Savage .45, belonging to a collector who fires it occasionally (hey, his money, so why not?)
Because of the operating system, recoil was a LOT worse than with the 1911.
I wouldn't want to fire many shots with one.

I have that one beat. I actually fired about a half-dozen rounds through a "Liberator" pistol not too long ago!
And no, I wouldn't want to shoot that one on a regular basis either.

Dang, I have a lowly Ballester Molina and love it. Time for Custom gun coming though.
I've loaded my own .45 ammo into the thousands now.

For the umpteenth time, I checked out the two tone Norinco NP-30 high capacity 1911 this morning at the nearby gunshop...
I planned not long ago in getting a beater 1911 45ACP for practical shooting, so as not to wear out my USP too soon...
But, I just don't feel that I've convinced myself enough to go over the edge and just do it... for a 1911. It may be "just fine", but I'm not there yet, you know...
Parting is such sweet sorrow :neener:

Anybody know anyone who has actually worn a 1911A1 out? Not talking about buying a used beater, but a brand new, out of the box commercial model, and if so, how many rounds did it take? I have an old Series 80 with the short-wide front sight and getting close to 100K through it-the only part that broke on me was the slide stop and that was my fault for not pressing it into the frame all the way-the first shot broke off the catch, but the pistol kept going, although it would not lock back after the last round. I tried 3 magazines before what was left of the slide stop finally came down and got in the way of the trigger-duh?! Put another one of those dreaded, man-killer MIM parts back on it and its still tickin! A buddy of mine who worked at an indoor range in Ft. Worth said they had a range rental which had an estimated300K+, figured on the ammo sold at the desk with the rental, and was still using all the original parts.

Those MEU/SOC guys are still running on WW2-vintage frames, although they have been rebuilt numerous times.

The 1911 has been controversial since at least 1907, before it was even introduced.
The Colt 45 Auto has passed from fact to legend. As the newspaperman said in "Liberty Valance," when the facts conflict with the legend, print the legend. I agree wholeheartedly! :D

Did your target look more like you had blasted a shotgun loaded with .45 balls at it? :D
From what I sort of vaguely remember, the Idea behind the few "Liberators" that got dropped in Europe was:
A Liberator will get you a Luger
A Luger will get you a Mauser
A Mauser will get you a Gewehr.....etc Keep passing down the arms you 'acquire'
