Pencil barrel M64

About twenty-five years ago I gave a favorite aunt a S&W M64 (no dash) to supplement her night-table .22. I had forgotten about it untill a few weeks ago when she passed. Her immediate family gave me back the .38 along with her pristine M43, the original bedside companion. Anyway, the M64 is a 4" pencil barrel. I'm certainly no Mike Irwin but I've been fooling around with S&W revolvers for 30 years or so and have seen very few M64 pencils. Were they only done the first run? Somewhat unusual? Don't have it in front of me so I don't have a serial number.
TIA

They didn't make a lot of them before dropping the skinny ones, as everybody, especially LEO's, wanted the heavy barrels. The pencil barrels are worth a very slight premium, but this may change in the future.

Taper-barrel 64's were only made from '70 to '73.

Though I don't know what 'premium' they command when they come up for sale. The 43 will bring low-mid $400s in my neighborhood.;)

I had one and liked it. It was my stainless Barney Fife gun. No speed loader, just one bullet in the front pocket. :D

Geez, what's to like?
His opinionated, loud, opinionated, obnoxious, opinionated, and opinionated.

Nothing wrong with a well worded, learned opinion.
But then, that's just my opinion.

I am getting a tapered mod 64 barrel and looking for a mod 65 round butt to put it on as my version of the mountain gun
and that's my opinion
does that make me opinionated
I wanna be like Mike
