What do y'all think of the Cavalry Arms Cav15 rifles? How do you think they stack up against the Carbon 15 Type 97? Both are designed to be lightweight and make heavy use of polymers or carbon fiber throughout. What are the pros and cons of each design? Which handles better? Is the Cav Arms rifle top heavy?

I have a CAV-15. It's not top heavy. Balances well for me. Upper is entirely DPMS forged. Lower is synthetic. It's real light. Can't say compared to Carbon 15 though.

Never held a CAV as I don't know there are that many on the market. With either gun you need a REALLY LIGHT barrel for the gun to ballance well. I think they are too light. 6 pounds is about the minimum I'd like a rifle to be for a steady hold.

With Cav arms you can option a pencil barrel or M4 barrel, which are lighter than their standard non-compensated barrel.

I have the M4 barrel. It looks good, and is lighter.

The rifle altogether weighs in about 5.7 - 6#. I love mine. It's more of a standard AR than the Carbon 15 I think. I'm not sure.

Disclaimer: I have never owned or used either of these rifles. I have held a Carbon-15 and they are light as all get out. I have also seen some of the CAV-15 rifles. They look a little Fisher-Price, but if they work that’s all that matters.

One advantage the CAV-15 would have over the Carbon-15 is that you can use uppers from most any manufactures as well as all parts for the upper. The Carbon-15 has very few parts that are interchangeable with a regular AR.

I have read that some owners have had many problems with the Carbon-15 as well. Check the TFL archives.

Hope that helps some.

My buddy has a Carbon-15 he bought just before the ban in Kali. He's wishing he bought a Bushy or anything else. He broke his extractor and didn't realize that the Carbon-15 has proprietary parts. Anyhow, it took months to get a replacement. Rumor is that Professional Ordnance had filed for bankruptcy.

I would stay away from the Carbon 15. Haven't heard too many glowing reviews of them.

I have a Cav 15 lower. I went the opposite direction with a 20 inch HBAR upper. I find that it feels really good to me.

One thing you may want to keep in mind is that the Cav15 stock is a bit longer than a standard A2 stock. Fits me perfect.

Only complaint about the lower? I cannot use the magazine as a fore grip like I normally would as there is enough play in the mag well for this to jam the gun. But as I understand this is a pretty common problem with lots of ARs, not just the Cav.

Just wrap your hand around the magazine well instead of the magazine.

I owned a Carbon 15. The gun is a good concept, but I had a lot of problems with it. The gun jammed with any brand of ammo. The gun was returned to the factory with no help. The distributor finally took the gun back from the dealer and I bought a Bushmaster (very nice gun). I have no experience with the CAV 15.
