Can the M700 bolt key lockout be removed this way?

A gunsmith told me the key lockout device on M700s and Model 7s can be removed simply by replacing the firing pin and the shroud on the back of the bolt. Is that true? Has anyone here tried this?

yep, it is true, and yep, i have done it.

you can also negate the lock by simply replacing the firing pin w/ one of the tubbs titanium pins. the j-lock will remain, but will no longer be effective.

Thanks, dakotsin. I would also want to replace the shround, since I hate the way the lockout device looks.

By the way, I called Remington's custom shop a few weeks ago, asking about a couple of models. I asked if they came with the lockout device. They said yes. This goony, lawyer, liberal device on a higher dollar, custom gun! Makes me absolutely sick. I said "nevermind - thanks, anyway..."

Steve,

Got a Holiday Gift brochure from Brownells today (guess you can figure out what kinda gun whacko I am from that!). What was interesting was that they listed Remington 700 Short Action Receivers for sale without the ISS device. Said that it was an exclusive deal with Remington, and kept mentioning that there was no ISS(j-lock). Looks like they are getting a bit of marketing pressure from their decision to put this lock on all their new guns.

I hope I had some help in this - over the summer I picked a Winchester M70 Featherweight over a Remington M700 Mountain Rifle because I didn't want the ISS lock. And I sent Remington an email telling them why I bought the Winchester instead of their rifle.

JohnDog,

Brownells is selling the entire receiver? Receiver, bolt, firing pin, etc.?

Thanks,
Steve

Steve,

Yup, entire receiver with full bolt and trigger for $400. If you want Green trigger guards, floorplates and mag bodies that will be extra - thank you!

Thank the Heavens!

I picked up the Remington "Classic" in .221 Fireball a while back.

Saw that #**m lock and could have thrown it out the window:cuss:

What a travesty! Especially on a "Classic".

I won't buy one with the thingy on it unless it's cheap enough I can make to change to remove it and be OK.

It's another solution to a problem that didn't exist.

I think the law enforcement models are coming without the lock. I have a new LTR that does not have the lock, and I saw a new PSS that was also sans lock.

Two 700s and an 870. I unlocked all of them and put the "keys" in my desk drawer.

So far, they have not activated themselves.

Okay, that goofy hole is still there. I don't look at that much.

I have the old style bolt plugs [without the lock] in blue, matte blue, and stainless. Your choice $15.00 shipped. These are geniune Remington parts. I have a good supply of these if you need multiples.:D
