Good and grippy now, the grip contour still fits my hand fine. I filed the front checkers off with a wood rasp, then made the template for the skateboard tape, and stuck it on. I like it, it's ugly and works.

I am sorry, but WHY ?? Forget about having any resale value in that thing. You know that they have rubber grip sleeves that work well for extra grip and do not ruin the pistol.
If you like it then good, I guess thats all that matters!

Why? Because I'm a broke college student who likes to tinker, and I've thought about it since I bought the gun. I don't plan on selling this gun, I love it. There's something reassuring about the recoil of a long slide .45, and now that it doesn't slip in my hand it's a blast to shoot.
Would it be less of a shock if the tape was black?

You should get together with this guy: http://forums.1911forum.com/showthread.php?t=253660&highlight=free+hand+checkering
Together y'all could really go places.
Just razing you man. It's your gun and if it works for you that is all that matters in the end.

Wow, that thread made me laugh. For a little money I could always have mine fixed. That kimber is beyond repair.
