VEPR II no question about it. As good a gun if not better than the Krebs offerings that are much more expensive. It is a bit heavy though since it is built on an RPK receiver.

I would try and save another $25 and get an Arsenal SA-M7.

SARs are a little on the rough side, but they work reliably and you can upgrade them as you go. They are about as close to a stock AKM as you can get in the post ban world.
VEPRs are dead reliable, as accurate as any AK can be, and balanced like a telephone pole. If you want a bench gun, one would rock.
If you want a gun to indulge your SHTF fantasies (Yes, I think we all have them), a VEPR may not be the best choice.
The Arsenal SA-M7 is a good gun. It is milled, so it will be a little heavier than the stamped SAR, but still better balanced than the VEPR.
I own a SA-M7 right now, and I have owned the other two as well.
All are AKs, which means that they will pretty much work no matter what.
I would like to get another SAR sometime in the near future, just to have another AK before/in case they find a way to ban them.

I would go with the SAR-1 for around $350, ten Polish Mags from AIM for $70, and 1K of ammo.
That should set you quite well for what you have to spend.

They run about $534.95 from Federal Arms. They also have the single to double stack conversions for $469 and $484 with scope mount. They are HERE (http://www.gunsnstuff.net/p/035f.html)

A VEPR, which in fact will be my next $500 purchase.

if you can find one i'd go with a SKS-D/M. it just my opinion that the sks design is more accurate than the ak plus the D and M models take ak mags. as long as you aren't looking for a full-auto bullet hose the sks-d/m is just as good, if not better. plus, if you can find one they go for 280-320$ and you'll still have money left over for mags and ammo.

One of the offerings from Arsenal USA. Check out their offerings at www.globaltrades.com. Good price. Great quality.

Addendum: I've had two VEPR's - a 5.45 and 7.62. You can't go wrong with them. Quality that rivals AR's. However, because of the RPK receiver, they are noticeably heavier. If you think that could be a factor, you might want to try one before buying.

Buy a SAR-1, an RSA trigger, and spend the remainder on ammo.

If you can find one, a Bulgarian SLR-95. Regardless, I'd try real hard to find something with a milled receiver.

What kind of quality are the Saiga receivers that Krebs uses?

Speaking of AKs, I know I would like to purchase one eventually (within the next year or so), is there any scuttlebutt about AKs coming into this country from countries other than Romania in the near future, or is a SAR 1 the best anyone can hope for in the foreseeable future in terms of buying an AK-type rifle? What about Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Yugoslavia, etc.?

I love my Yugo SKS, but I haven't reached the point of "needing" an AK just yet (though, I'm sure that time will surely come.)

Steve, Saiga receivers are excellent. They are made in the same factory as the real thing.

I've got a Saiga and a Vepr. I think the Vepr is the nicer gun. But as has been pointed out, it is heavier.

No, they don't. They take only saiga mags. However, they can be modified to take hicaps, if you add enough us made parts to make it legal. Lots of people convert them to pistol-grip, hicaps.
