Can I shoot federal slugs out of my remington 870? A friend told me that only certain remingtons can take slugs...

Your friend is wrong. I carried a Model 870 Shotgun in a patrol car for 26 years, and put lots and lots of slugs, 00 Buck and birdshot through them. I have one in my closet right now that is loaded with 00 Buck, but has fired lots of slugs.

Hope this helps.

Yes, you can. Read the archived thread "Slugs 101" at the top for more info.

The guy at the shop managed to avoid a face palm when I asked this, he said that if I was planning on shooting more than a few, it would be best to get as open a choke as I could, but if I was just going to shoot a couple, my modified choke would be fine.

I also realized that if shooting a slug through a choke (non IC or something like that) caused instant death of the universe, there would be an unbelievable number of warnings all over the place.

The counter man at the local chain store called me and asked the same question. I suggested he read the label on the boxes of factory shotgun slugs he sells. He called back and said he felt foolish, since the boxes said they could be fired through any choke, and he should have looked there before calling me.

Hope this helps.
