do you know what model it is?
should be stamped on the frame were you open the cylinder.

If you've got a Smith made after the 1950's, you should see a model # on the frame on inside the crane (the part that connects the cylinder to the frame.) If there is no such model #, it was made before this time frame. It would help if you provide more info: how many shots - a six shot cylinder likely indicates a K-frame, while a five shot is a J-frame. Also sights are important - fixed or adjustable. The half-moon front sight is earlier than the ramp. Barrel: tapered or heavy? You can also do internet searches to show you the difference between the long-action Smiths and the short-action which replaced it, to help you identify your time frame.
