Just an old .410 I was given from my grandfather. Don't really know much about break action guns. So I came here for some help.

The problem is when the trigger is pulled the hammer hits the firing pin, but it seems that the pin is not long enough. You can tilt the gun back and forth and watch the pin move in and out.

Once the trigger is pulled this is the amount of space between the hammer and the pin. Pin was all the way forward in this picture, and the hammer will not move any more forward.

I have found parts online, but I am not sure what I need. Is it just a new firing pin that is needed?

If the firing pin is all the way back, the hammer will strike it, but it does not have enough power to set the shell off. The hammer strikes very hard as well.


Any help here? I know it's not worth much or anything, but I would like it to be able to shoot again. :)

It appears the gun has a rebounding hammer safety feature.

Try holding the trigger back and push foreword on the hammer and see if it will then push the firing pin all the way out the front of the standing breach.

There should be a tiny coil spring around the FP to retract it after firing.
It may be wadded up in front of the FP preventing full travel.

The thing to do is, take the screw out on top of the receiver and get the FP & spring out.
Then you can see what you have to replace.

That's what came out. No little spring in there.

Just the spring is missing?

Well, it appears from the schematic it should have a spring part #6A.

That would not make it not fire though.
Did you test the rebounding hammer function I outlined above?

The hammer works like it is suppose to as far as the rebounding goes. But it only pushes the pin as far as the picture I posted above (third picture down)

When I did try and fire it it did hit the primer, but not hard enough. Tried on 2 different shells. Same thing on both.

Well, you show plenty of firing pin protrusion in the picture.

So, the only other thing it can be is a weak hammer spring.

You might pull the stock off and clean the snot out of everything inside the action.
Maybe it is just gummed up enough with old grease & dirt to slow the hammer down.
