OK.
Some sales clerk told me the internal magazine for the Yugo SKS is only 5 rounds. What gives, was I wrong thinking it was 10 this whole time?

Every one I've seen has been 10, but you can get 5 rd detachables for hunting where cap is restricted. Maybe someone is making the internals the same way.

The ones that were imported to Canada had the magazine capacity reduced to 5 rnds I believe. The normal capacity is 10 rnds. If he told you all Yugo's have a 5 rnd magazine, he didn't know what he was talking about. Perhaps he was referring to a specific rifle in the shop?

Also, that may well be a California thing to get the SKS in under CA Law. Most SKSs don't qualify for California sales. Some have been qualified by removing some of the things like bayonets and grenade launchers. Unfortunately, such changes usually also make the rifle non-C&R.

I bought mine in CA in January of 2003 and the magazine is unaltered from the standard 10-rnd capacity. The only change was the installation of a muzzle brake in place of the grenade launching device.

I'm under the impression that most SKS's are legal in California. The only ones which are illegal are those with detachable mags and those with grenade launchers.

I purchased my Russian laminated stock, folding bayonet, and 10rnd fixed magazine SKS last fall from my local store in Kali. 10rnd fixed magazines are legal.

My Yugo holds 10 (officially; it actually will hold 11 rounds :D ).
