What happens when you fire a 5.56 X 45 round in an AR-15 chambered in .223 Remington ???

You can damage the rifle, 5.56 is loaded to higher pressures.

Its fine to fire .223 in a 5.56 rifle but not the other way around.

It goes bang and the bullet goes downrange. No problem.

This has been cussed and discussed ad nauseum in this and other forums for years. I have done it, I know friends who have done it, and I have never, ever, heard of a gun being damaged. That MIGHT be a problem ONLY if you are loading the 5.56 at or above the maximum pressure. Actually there is not likely to be a problem at all because of where the pressure is measured in relation to the cartridge but that's a long discussion and really not warranted here.

I have a new AR-15 that is suppose to be a 5.56 chambered rifle. However 5.56 X 45 Radway Green SS109 is failing to eject the spent casing when fired. The casing has the rim ripped off after I tap it out of the chamber with a cleaning rod. Just wondering if this could be caused by the rifle being chambered in .223 and not 5.56 as advertised ???
Oh....I cleaned the chamber..Ammo is clean..................

Just shoot .223 out of everything.

Cheap ammo will do this. I had this happen to me using WOLF.

My gun actually says on the side of the lower... Cal .223-5.56MM and it has never never ever ever gave me any issues of shooting either.

0V3RC10CK3D Has good advice! :p

With an AR the lower can say anything: It has no bearing on what the barrel is chambered for.

5.56 in a .223 is on the SAMMI website as being an unsafe combo, Who are you going to believe, us or people that actually get paid paid to know this stuff?
