I will soon have an M4 mid length carbine with a 6 position stock and an A2 front sight. What kind of a sling set-up do I need for home defense/SHTF and maybe a little walk about hunting? Please include names and parts I will need. Thanks.

My AR/M4s are all equipped to use the two-point Vickers Tactical Combat Applications Sling from Blue Force Gear (http://www.blueforcegear.com/product.cfm?type=cat&cat_id=5&prod_id=79)

I use a GG&G front Sling-Thing (http://www.gggaz.com/index.php?id=69&parents=153,174) and I simply attach the rear of the sling to the buttstock. You can also use a simple USGI style M4 side mount Sling swivel - see item AR0161 (http://www.rockriverarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=349).

Good luck!

There is no right answer. I prefer 2 point slings, but I have friends that swear by 1 point slings.

Even after you pick how many attachment points you want, you'll have the option (depending on what parts you buy) of where to attach, which is also personal preference.

Lots of guys set up like this, using the front sight sling loop and the stock:

Others prefer to attach the front of the sling closer to the receiver, which generally requires a separate attachment point that fits on a quad rail:

Still other prefer to move the rear of the sling closer to the receiver, like this:

As for brand, I bought a used gun that came with a Vickers and decided I liked it, so that's what I run.

Sorry if this wasn't much help, but there are lots of options and you just kind of have to find what works best for you.

I use a VTAC quick adjust two point, with a GG&G rear sling thing, and MI sling loop on the fore end (quad rail). The sling loops I have aren't required, it just worked out better for me to have the sling mounted on the side rather than the bottom.

I'd go with the padded VTAC or the Vickers if I did it over again. I probably will if my income ever catches up to my plans, or at least closes the gap a little...

I also have a blue force gear single point with the HK-style claw, all of my ARs have the receiver plate to allow the use of it.

The one point is great for use at the range, because its easy on/off. I wouldn't want to wear it hiking because you have to keep one hand on the rifle to keep it from bouncing off your jewels. The two point is easy to adjust so you can pull the rifle tight to your body while you climb, or do any other type of movement that requires the use of two hands.

I'd start with the USGI stock that comes with the rifle (or can be bought for $10) first. Then find out what you don't like about it to help choose your next sling. So far I'm still satisfied with the GI sling but looking for JTRST ("just the right sling thing").

sector gear single point sling
sector gear HK hook adapter
MI HK hook ambi mount (attaches on the buffer tube where it threads into the reciever)

This is a sling for standing still and haveing a hand free. Very nice for that, but you can't sling it onto your back like a 2 point sling. I keep a 2 point sling handy if I'm packing the AR out instead of carrying it.

Magpul MS2 is what I am running now. I did a review and comparison here if you search on it. Nice rig, even without the ASAP.

2-Point Quick Adjust is preferable for most people in most situations.
