I've got to buy my 8 year old great niece a 22 caliber rifle for Christmas. I want one made for a person of that age( One made for a child). It is my understanding that there in one with a magazine that is bolt action not just a single shot bolt action. Do any of ya"ll have any suggestions. She has already got 20.00 from her Grandfather and she said she was going to buy a gun . So this is going to be my surprise from her great aunt!! She went hunting with her Dad --- up at 5:00 am and sat on a stand and watched him take a ten point. Of coarse I've let her shoot some of my rifles and she has helped clean some of my deer in the past. Nothing like a woman passing on the great tradition. Suggestions welcomed!

About the company that has the "balls" to actually say they have a youth model that I've found is http://www.henryrepeating.com/. The only bad thing is their youth model is lever action.

Marlin may still have theirs but it is a single shot bolt action model.

Thanks for the info. I've already checked with the place where I usually buy my firearms. But my brother -in law and a guy friend says there is a bolt action that has a small magazine(maybe 5) instead of a single shot. I plan on getting it engraved with her name and date and of coarse that it was from her great aunt KIM.

First off, welcome to THR.

Secondly, the link below is to the Savage website. They have several .22 bolt actions with detachable magazines. The one on the link has an MSRP of $144, comes with a scope and rings, and uses a 10 round magazine. The overall length is 40 inches, with a 20 inch barrel. They have several other versions, including one with a hardwood, Monte Carlo stock. Just check out the list on the left-hand side.

A quick search of Gunbroker came up with these alternatives:

CZ 452 Scout Youth (bolt with mag)
Taurus M62 (pump with tube)

The CZ looks nice, but with a 21 inch barrel, I'm not sure how "Youthful" it is.

At 8, she can prolly handle the CZ fine anyway.

It should be possible to find a CZ Scout with 16.2" barrel, and the ability to set it up as a single shot or use 5 or 10 round mags is very nice (I just bought 2 for my twin boys and really like them).

As a first rifle, I'd strongly recommend the Cricket - very small size, for very young shooters. Wal-Mart has them, or can order them for you. It's a great "starter" gun.

My vote is for the CZ Scout. It is very accurate and a high quality gun. Give them a gift that will last and something that they can shoot accurately. I'm sure the Savage, Marlin and Henry are decent, but I just think the CZ is nicer than the rest. They run around $150.

I just went through this with my 7 year old daughter.

The smallest rifles were the only ones that fit her:

The Savage cub was the one we decided on. $125 at dicks sports.

The Savage just fit her and my son it was almost too big for them to reach the trigger and see the sights, so as they grow a bit it will fit them better.
The marlin youth and the larger savage youth rifles were too big and heavy for my daughter.

The keystone crickett is the smallest Walmart sells it for $99.
I found the striker too difficult for my children to cock.

I would have tried the CZ scout but no one had one in stock to handle, and by its description its probably too big.

The best advice I can give you is dont buy sight unseen, and take the child with you so she can try it and see if the length and weight are not too much for her to handle.

It's a single shot. I'm a 240lb 36 year old man but I would love one of these little beauties!

It's a neap perfect youth rifle. I think single shots make for better marksmanship. Light weight, No mags to loose, would last a few lifetimes. It's an excellent choice.

My buddy had one with a hex barrel. Damn I wish I had bought it from him.

I just got for my son (8 in February) a Rossi Matched Pair .22/.410. It's a single shot break action that Dicks sporting goods has on sale for under $100.00. With the shotgun barrel included, it's a great value. My son loves his.

Another vote for the CZ 452 Scout (16.5" barrel).

While the Scout's length of pull is shorter than CZ's full-size 452 Lux, it's not so short that a youngster would quickly out grow it.

This is something to consider since a kid's 22 is usually a "starter" firearm, intended as a means of introducing him/her to gun safety and marksmanship. So it should "fit" them well enough to last more than a year or two. I've looked at the Chipmunks and Henrys for my nieces and nephews too, but, while not bad, these little .22s just aren't ones they'd shoot for very long before needing something bigger.

Out of the box, the CZ Scout is a single shot, but will accept 5- and 10-rd mags. It also has a decent trigger, based on the several I've handled and dry-fired. Sights are buckhorn style, but the grooved receiver might accept the Williams aperture sight for .22s (or something similar), if that's preferred.

Price-wise among competing .22 "youth" rifles, I think the Scout's a steal.

I Strongly recommend the Cricket as Preacherman suggested. It is a singleshot, and should fit someone of that age perfectly.
