Trailside Competition, Worth it?

Hey all,

Been pondering the purchase of the Sig Trailside Competition. Anyone have any experience? Has Hammerli/Sig worked out the kinks from the earlier models? I know the newer models have a redesigned extractor and they beefed up the mags. Ammo sensitive? What is everyone else paying for them? I already have 2 Ruger MkIIs (slab side and bull barrel) so I'm not looking at anything else but the Trailside.

Thanks all!

I've had a MK II bull for a number of years. I bought a Trailside last year(6" adj) and it shoots better than the Mk II which doesn't see the light of day much any more. I prefer the TS.

I was very excited about the top of the line Trailside until I actually handled one. It looked flimsy. The stocks felt cheap. The puny little plastic magazines were a show stopper for me. A few weeks later, I met a guy with one he'd bought used. He said it shot accurately, but one of the magazines had cracked, and was no longer reliable.

For that much money, I'd expect real wooden stocks and real steel magazines.

A Trailside in CA? :scrutiny: How long have they been approved? or are you buying used?

it made the doj exemption for olympic class firearms. check the doj site, they have an newly updated expanded list. i'm leaning toward the competition model.

If I have a target .22 with anatomic grips, I want them to be real anatomic grips--adjustable and made for my hand.

That's why I got the Trailside with the nice laminated blue/grey regular grips. One day I'll get some real anatomics if Randall Fung makes them for the Trailside...

I bought a 'demo' 6" standard model from my local store last year. It's an earlier one, so it's a little finicky with ammo. But the price was way good, less than half of what a used S&W model 41 was going for.

Since then I've added adjustable rear sights, adjustable grips, more barrel weight, and a 1" Ultradot red dot from , great guys to do business with.

It's still finicky, but I accept that. For me it's a range plinker, not a competition piece. It shoots extremely well, (with some ammo), and is a breeze to clean (having to remount the ded dot everytime not-withstanding). Never had a magazine problem, so can't comment on that.

I was considering a competition model before I ran accross this one, but it was just too much money for what I consider a high-end plinker.

YMMV

It was my Trailside Competition that Standing Wolf checked out, and I guess was disappointed in.
I consider it worth every penny of the $450 I paid for it, cracked magazine (still works) and all. Since I quit using truncated-cone profile bullets (and, uhh, cleaned it :o ) the feed reliability has been near-perfect. It still gives a few misfires, but that doesn't bother me much.

It has a super-sweet trigger, good sights, great grips, and fantastic accuracy (the factory test target isn't kidding). If you made me pick between the SIG T.S. Comp. and my other .22, a Ruger 6 7/8" Comp., I'd pick the SIG in a heartbeat.

BUT, I'd have a hard time spending $650 for one.

(OTOH, at least they're available now, a year ago you couldn't get one for love or money.)
