I am looking for a 308 for target shooting out to 300 yds. The shooting I do is just friendly competition. I was going to get a rem700 however after researching I am interested in the savage accutrigger. Most of the savage LE types are 24" barrels while the 700 I was looking at is 20" From what I have read 20 to 22" barrel is all you need for 300 yards or less. Anyway after looking over the savage site, now I am interested also in the accustock models. I would like to hear from some of the savage owners on if/how/what they like about there rifles. Thanks.

Welcome to THR, alphabrace!

Savage=Good. .308Win. would not be my personal choice, but if you don't reload it isn't bad (match loads are plentiful). If you do reload I would look into the 7mm-08, if not the .223Rem wouldn't be a bad option as match is also readily available and the lower expense of ammunition.

Savage 10FP....great shooter out to 1,000 yards. It's an excellent value for under $600. Some models now have the "accustock". I recommend them as a great gun to start with. Once you can shoot to the gun, then look at moving up to a custom rifle. But for 99% of shooters, Savage makes more than enough gun.

Once you can shoot to the gun, then look at moving up to a custom rifle. You still don't need no stinkin' custom, just but a little cash into the Savage for a new match bbl (Krieger is my preference, not that the factory bbl is bad) trued to the action, a better stock (like a McMillan), and perhaps a better trigger. Oh, and don't forget to sink some money into good optics and mounts...more important than the rifle IMO.

I love mine, shoots sub-MOA groups at 100 yards, takes deer/hogs/'yotes, and didn't cost me an arm and a leg.

I have two Savages in .308 --- a 10fp and a 112/116{?} --- both of them are pre-Accu Trigger and after a trigger job --- BOTH will shoot 1/2" at 100 yds. with Fed.Gold 168s or my handloads. My local range goes out to 300 yds. --- either Savage will print under 3" for a 5 rd. group off bags.

The Savage has long been known as a "Best Buy" in long range rifles.

Anybody know why Savage mostly has 24" barrels on the tactical rifles? I would like a 20" barrel that is stock. That is one plus for the remington 700 tactical.

+2 for the Savage 10FP, Defiantly 1/2" at 100 yards. Here is one of my best three shot groups.

well probably the biggest factors in that are that
for various reasons 24" has kinda of become the "Standard" length for heavy barreled rifles in non-magnum calibers.
Most folks don't care, don't know enough about the pluses and minuses of 26" Vs 24" Vs 20" so they'll just go with the one that's easiest to get
of those that Do care, Most are going to want the mid length anyway.

If you want a 20" barrel and don't mind the ACU camo job stock, buy a 10 Precision Carbine. which unlike many of the others has the Accu-stock (a BIG plus over any of the similarly priced Remingtons).
