This is the latest bullet pen I made, just now actually. The cap is a 58 miniball and the writing tip is a 45 caliber, wood is red dyed stabilized maple. Finish is gunmetal black :) The trim is also in 2-3 other finishes.

Felt it was fitting for this forum.

This one may be a better image.

Very nice. What did you use on the bullets for finish, looks great.
I ordered some of those 'rifle' clips last week.
I've used .303 and 7.62 brass and bullets to make pens. They are a big success at Christmas.

Anyone thinking about making these pens it does not cost a lot to get started. Under $200 well get you setup with the basic tools and Lathe (http://www.amazon.com/SHOP-W1704-3-Horsepower-Benchtop-Lathe/dp/B001R23SWW/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1267446655&sr=8-9)

You can spend ten times that if you like, plus there is a ton of specialty tools you can go crazy buying. The pen parts are pretty cheap, you spend more on wood blanks than anything. You can make a basic wood pen in under an hour start to finish. It's a enjoyable hobby and doesn't take up that much room. I mounted my small lathe on a roll around cart and store all the extras underneath it.

Also will need a drill press, something to trim the ends of the blanks to make them a perfect 90 degree and flat. If you are using certain types of plastics then a belt sander is a must. A good set of chisels, sand paper and finishing products.
