M1 Rifle and a case of milsurp .30 caliber ammunition.
Civilian Marksmanship Program (http://www.odcmp.com/)
I also recommend that you get into reloading for cost savings on ammunition. LEE (http://leeprecision.com/) is about the most affordable equipment for handloading.

I agree the Garand is a great Home Defense Rifle, esp. after the little war in Iraq starts and the ragheads start with the drive by shootings, etc. in this country. M-2 ball won't have any trouble with penetrating cars. I think a Garand is a little much for my wife, so the M-1 carbine is for her.

Got the M1. Got the case of milurp (Danish on clips) ammo. Got the reloader. Got several funny little ole GI military clips full of ole military ammo with funny black paint on the tips. Hehe.

Heck, for close work, I'll nominate my trusty little AK-47.

Whatever now works for "life on the street" would work just as well if Islamic crazies were running loose on the streets...

have the "US Rifle, Cal 30 M1" popularly known as 'The Garand', and just for fun a Mosin-Nagant M-44.
M-N M-44 is an interesting carbine, with the fold-out bayonet that DOES affect windage.
Also have lotza pre-loaded en-blocs for the M-1, and strippers for the M-44. M-1 is faster to 'full reload', while it is easier to do a tactical top-off for the M-44......although I have seen some REALLY fast guys with the stripper clips.

Good choice!
My choice is the AR-15 loaded a a 30 rounder of W-W M855 ball.
And if Ahab the Arab is hiding behind something, I pulled the black tipped bullets from some .30 cal M2 AP and reloaded them in .300 WinMag cases. They do pretty out of my Remingtons' 26 inch barrel!

At this point I'm still worried more about the Fed. govt than terrorists. That could easily change, at least for awhile.
Oh, and my go-to rifle would be my Bushy AR M4gery.
