Mag release - Do you use the tip of your thumb or "base" of your thumb?

I use the 'base' of my thumb, near the joint - I can get more positive power on it than with my tip - comes in handy with stiffer ones like Kahrs, Sigs, and 1911s.

What do youens do?

i THINK it depends on the gun.

My Mark III I use the tip.
S&W 22a I use the tip since in the front of the grip and a bit recessed.
PX4 I am pretty sure I use the base.

I would have to say the "base" --- more like the middle of the "tip" !!!

Depends on the gun/hand fit.

Right now, I'm using my right finger, also my trigger finger, to activate the ambi release on my Glock 21-SF I don't have to shift my grip as much, therefore it's faster and more reliable.

I took a professional shooting course once and the instructor did a few things with one efficient motion. With his shooting hand (right handed) he sort-a flicked the gun about 20 degrees to the left in his hand so his thumb could press the mag release, which he executed. With his off hand he retrieved a reload and inserted in the magwell. Reload took about 2 seconds maximum and was one fluid motion.

Yes, it does depend on the gun. Just practice what works for you.

i agree it depends on the gun, the gun that i carry and train the most with is an xd service model with the ambi mag release so i use the trigger finger to depress the magazine release.

on guns that don't have the ambi release, then it depends on how thick, or wide the gun is. i have small hands so on most guns i would have to rotate it a little and use the tip of my thumb.

wow. what does it say about me that I dont even know how i hit the release?

lol.

I have probably done it 1000 times. It just happens.

I am almost positive I hit it with the side of my thumb.

I'm left handed, but don't go to a left handed or ambi mag release. I just use the tip of my trigger finger to press the release as I'm drawing the new mag with my right hand. I'm already bringing the fresh one up to insert as the empty is falling free. Minimal (if any) change in gun position and sight picture. Takes practice, but once you master the technique, it's scary quick.

I do the same, no 1911 though.

We southpaws may be "sinister" but we're consistent.

On left-side only mag releases, I'll swing around and hit it with the tip of my thumb (have to adjust my grip - I have short fingers).

I prefer ambi-dextrous releases though. On those, I'll usually release the mag on the opposite side with my middle finger. I can pull back just that finger without adjusting my grip. It's much faster.
