O/U-Top barrel 1st-Any problem??

I have an O/U shotgun where the barrel selector is in the trigger.

Leaving the selector popped out to the right is more convenient for barrel selection---but leaving it that way also fires the top barrel first.

So I just put the IC tube in the top barrel and the MOD in the bottom barrel---and just fire the top barrel first.

Any problems with this?? Other than going against tradition.

Personally, I almost always fire the top barrel first when hunting. My reasoning is that the bottom tube normally has a full-choke, for when I shoot trap. When I'm hunting I'll often use Modified in one barrel and Full in another. Instead of having to swap two chokes around, I just put Mod in the top and leave the bottom alone.

BTW, I've never been able to succesfully switch the barrel selector once birds are in the air. However, when hunting behind a flusher, I'll sometimes switch to the tighter choked barrel if the dog starts to range a little farther than normal. Once he slows down (or I catch up), I'll move it back to theother barrel.

The reason for bottom barrel first is that the bottom barrel being lower produces less muzzle rise thus easier to get the second shot.

mete - While I recognize the reasoning behind shooting the bottom barrel first, I can honestly say that I don't find any substantial difference in muzzle rise. Besides, since your focus should be on the target -- not on the gun -- I can't see where a little extra muzzle rise would be a problem.

No problems at all. As noted the bottom barrel is usualy shot first to reduce recoil somewhat but that's the only impact.

But if you want to select barrels in mid flush, two triggers is the way to go.

It's your call. I prefer two triggers myself, switching chokes or loads is much easier that way.

Pop used to use the top barrel first on his old Savage O/U when waterfowling. He'd take a bird farther away than the leaders, then one of the "Candy" birds up front. Flushing upland birds would mean going for the bottom barrel first.

I shoot the top barrel first as I figure that is the one I am sighting down.

I shoot the top barrel first, the gun design selects that one when I close it. One less thing to think about, I don't notice a difference either way.

What make of gun? I've heard of non-selectable trigger trap combos set up this way, the Perazzi MX3 as an example.

Browning Citori- it defaults to the top barrel when you close it. It is selectable, though.

The Citori "defaults" to which ever barrel you had selected. If set to "U" ,it will fire the bottom (Under) barrel first repeatably until you change to "O" (Over).

Correct. As I said, one less thing to worry about.
