I love this time of year. I love the whole planning process and the contemplating/fantasizing about new places to hunt. Trying to map out schedules with all the guys for group hunts, trying to go hunting in whichever state one of my brothers is living in now. It's fun time for me.
I know some people don't get jazzed about the planning and prefer to just leave it to others, but not me or most of my friends.
Just this Saturday we had our big meeting/application party, hammered out our Colorado and Wyoming hunts. Did some turkey planning for Nebraska and the West Slope. We also kicked around the ideas of some new states to hunt. Maybe it's just because there's nothing other than snow geese to hunt right now that I get so excited. But I also enjoy scouting trips and map research.
I know I'm not alone. Anyone else enjoy this time of year?

I would be if I had enough time to go on hunting trips. Between work and family responsibilities, I'm lucky to get out more than four or five days during during deer season.

I agree that planning would be half the fun. I really like the satellite shots and comparing those to topo maps.

I'm the only one in my family that gets excited this soon. They all leave it up to me.

I get excited for awhile when I find out the draw results, but not too much until then. If I get a good tag (like bull elk), it literally carries me thru the year. The year I drew a bull tag, I bet I didn't go two days straight without saying to myself "I have a bull tag!"

i love this time of year - the range is almost always utterly empty.

tags aren't due here for several months. i've already hunted several other states and found i like the hunting here better. one of these years i'll go to alaska or canada, and then i'll probably get excited about the application process. until then, i'm headed to the range...

good luck to everybody planning on the 2010 seasons - i hope they go well!

Carving/repairing decoys, practicing hail calls, reloading, dog training...we 'hunt' year round.
