Still in search for the right combination in a 12 gauge coach gun......I have read that choke tubes can get suck with some loads and yet others say that I/C and mod is good enough for most everything.
I intend to use the coach as a truck gun and for grouse hunting as well as my house gun...... Yes I want it all! I don't know that I would use it for slugs, but maybe buckshot and number 6 shot , keeping my options open for steel also. So what is the recommended way to go for my wants.
I am looking for either the Stoeger or a CZ.
Thanks to everyone on this forum for the help!

I'd suggest determining the primary purpose of the shotgun. This will help steer you in the right direction.

If it's a gun for HD, that's one thing. If it's kept in the truck for Grouse, that's another.

If the primary purpose is to protect your family, the answer becomes very clear. The Grouse can wait.

Use the right tool for the right application :) You probably already know the answer but may be vacillating due to so many great options!

FWIW, my Stoeger Coach Gun has been great!

Take care,

For grouse the IC/Mod combo is just about ideal. If you;re going to shoot slugs and buckshot with it and want the best accuracy, then the only way to find out what works best is to experiment and you'd need screw-in tubes for that.

The IC/Mod barrels would probably work OK for them at close range, though.

Before the advent of interchangeable choke tubes, the IC/M combo was THE choice for most upland hunting scenarios. For most scenarios today, it still is.

If you're hunting grouse in close timber, chokes that are more open will probably be more successful. Those open chokes will also do fine for HD distances. If you get a selection of tubes, then you'll need to pattern them to see what works with the ammo you intend to use. Just because a choke says it is a IC, for example, doesn't mean in your gun, with your ammo, that it will be that choke pattern

If you're going to end up with IC/M anyway, fixed barrels are easier to clean and hassle/trouble free.
