Also, here's a set I made before I got the band saw. Inspired by Nill Master Series grips, they're contoured to perfectly fit my hands with a thumbs-forward grip, and stippled everywhere my hands touch wood. There's some fitting problems that make them a little hard to look at and impede the use of the mag well a little, but they're very functional and comfortable:

I really like the feel of the stippling I do, it provides grip similar to Nill stippling or Nill Rhomlas (my favorite grip textures) depending upon how sharp an edge the wood can hold.

That has an uncanny resemblance to a hoof.

Seriously, some of those are really good looking. You ever make grips for other styles of guns besides 1911s?

Thank you! Here's two others I've done:

A couple friends are wanting me to make grips for their Sigs, I'm going to take a crack at that soon. It'll be a bit more of a challege, though, since the way they fit onto the gun is much more complex and I don't have proper woodworking tools. (I do all my work with an orbital sander, a Dremel, and now a bandsaw)

Nice. What did you use to stipple those grips? Center punch, drill bit?

Wenge grips that will replace the stock ones as my carry grips:

This wood reacts very well to my stippling, they are incredibly grippy.

Cocobolo grips for the SIS I will be using for carry as well. The stippling doesn't hold as good an edge as other woods like Wenge or Zebrawood, so they'll probably end up getting replaced eventually. Still, they're better than the feathery-topped stippling that the Picana Negra ones from earlier in the thread hold:

I am inspired.

Lacking a 1911, I shall make grips for my CZ52 out of the Red Maple I have in my basement.

Some very nice "original" one-of-kind, made to (self) order, wood grips..

Well done, :)

Nice work. Not knocking on you but I would have put a border around the stippling with a single line checkering tool to define the pattern. Just my preference.

Nice work on the grips...JMHO but I'd invest in a new set of grip screws to show them off in the best light. :)

No woodworker I, but a couple of tips to DIY grip makers. First, always drill the holes first and get the spacing right. I knew a fellow who did up a set of elaborately carved grips then drilled the holes off and ruined them. Second, on a pistol with grip screw bushings, the screws should stop on the bushings and the grips are made so the screws just "kiss" the wood without compressing it.
