MarkDozier March 7, 2010, 03:12 AM There are many makers. but Pro ears are among my fiirst choice. They are worth while if you spend much time at the range.
Research is what you should do. Talk to people, look at reviews, but in the end it is money well spent
Skoghund March 7, 2010, 03:54 AM I use Peltor Sport tac for all range and hunting shooting.
natman March 7, 2010, 05:41 AM I've had very good luck with a set of Peltor 6s. I've put hundreds of hours hunting on mine and am very happy with them.
jcwit March 7, 2010, 08:38 AM I've tried 5/6 different brands all the way from inexpensibe Caldwells to higher priced Silencio. After 5 to 6 years of trying different makes and models settled on a pair of Howard Leight Impact Sport. They work fantastic, cut the gunshot but still allow you to hear normal conversation easily. The best part I like is they do not blank out for a gunshot, just lower it to an amount where its not harmful.
GBExpat March 7, 2010, 10:42 AM I have been using a set of Peltor Tactical 6-S protectors for about 6-7 years and am very satisfied with them.
Legionnaire March 7, 2010, 10:48 AM I've been using Peltor Tac-7s for 10 years or so. Original set is at least that old and still working great. They make slimmer versions now, but I'm quite content with the 7s.

I just bought a pair of these. Got them from Midway and they arrived late last week. I am looking forward to trying them out one day this week hopfully.
rainbowbob March 7, 2010, 04:38 PM I too am in the market for a quality amplifying head-set. I noticed that the Peltor 6 has a noise reduction rating of 20-dB, and the Peltor 7 has a noise reduction rating of 25-db.
Which is preferrable and why? I believe the higher the noise reduction number the better, but I don't why. Anyone?
The prices are all over the place, with the 6s going for around $70, and the 7s going for around $140. Are the 7s twice as good? I'm looking for as much protection for these aging ears as I can find.
hso March 7, 2010, 05:02 PM You should always wear plugs under muffs. Foam plugs are readily available with NRRs of 30+.
Electronic muffs with ratings of 20 dB are common.
Using electronic muffs with volume control allows you to wear plugs and still hear range commands and conversation between shots while getting composite protection of 35 dB. You don't get to add the two because they don't perfectly cover the same high and low ranges of frequencies, but they do overlap well in the middle. As such the recommendation is to simply add 5 dB for the muffs over the plugs. Since the sound pressure level (noise) is logarithmic you reduce the damaging sound level by 50% with that additional 5 dB protection.
Friends of mine have the Howard Leight Impacts and I have the Peltors. Both seem to do their job well, but the Impacts are easier to change batteries in than my Peltors.

From that I would conclude that the Peltor 7 at 25db is twice as much protection as the Peltor 6 at 20db...right?
