I have a Remington 870 Shotgun 20 gauge.

I'm looking to replace the barrel for rifle sights and to use slugs.

I see on Cabela's that they have two barrels with rifle sights:
an improved cylinder and full rifled barrel.

What is the improved cylinder?

Improved cylinder is the fixed choke restriction in the barrel. This means that the barrel is a smooth bore and you should fire 'rifled slugs' out of it.

The fully rifled barrel has rifling in the barrel. You should shoot sabot slugs out of this type of barrel.

Will this only be used to shoot slugs? Do you intend to hunt with it or is this be used for home defense or something else? What type of barrel do you already have for it?

I bought it new. I'm not sure what barrel is on it. Except that it has the bead front sight.

I wanted rifle sights and the ability to use slugs for home defense.

Are you saying that improved cylinder can use slug or buckshot?

The improved cylinder barrel can use slugs and buckshot.

The rifled barrel is not ideal for buckshot and it should be avoided because of erratic patterns from the rifling acting on the shot.

Yes, I'm assuming that you are looking at the 20 inch barrel with the improved cylinder fixed choke (smooth bore). You can use this to fire rifled slugs or buckshot.

Sabot slugs are for use in a rifled barrel... and you shouldn't shoot buckshot, birdshot or rifled slugs out of this type.

For your uses the Improved Cylinder barrel is the one you want.

Yes!

Remington has been making the vast majority of their factory 18.5- 20" barrels with a fixed ImpCyl choke for the past several years. The little bit of choke helps even out buckshot patterns and usually shoots rifled slugs a little more accurately than a straight CYL bore.

Lee is understating, usually shoots rifled slugs a little more accurately than a straight CYL bore.

IMHO,throwing slugs by hand is more accurate than a straight CYL bore. I've spent piles of $ and bruised mine and my buddies shoulders trying to find a rifled slug that would shoot accurately from the CYL barrel. Save yourself the effort, buy the improved cyl barrel. Then try Federal rifled slugs. Accurate to 50yards. (My litmus is 3" x5@50yds) HD ranges are significantly less and the inverse aspect (spread) of 00 buck is maxed. It of course would be more open with CYL but then the slugs would be taking right turns at 25 feet.:what:

Even better, Brenneke has come out with the KO slug in 20 gauge. I just got a couple of sleeves of them, haven't had a chance to try them on the range yet...
